Le Grand Courlan Spa Resort - Reader Reports & Opinion

Cyber Cafe Warning

Kevin Houston

intrnet access at LGC is limited but cheap. however it was not working one day and my wife used a small cyber cafe/shack around the corner.after signing off she noticed that her screen name and password had been saved to the desktop which would have meant that the next user could have accessed her emails by pressing the refresh button. she also found hundreds af dodgy letters/emails regarding fraudulent lottery wins etc which had been sent from that computer.

my advice- dont use it.

Le Grand Courlan Spa

this is my first post on this site...my husband and i are off to Le Grand Courlan Spa on the 24th January for 2 weeks and after reading all these really poor reports about it i'm now very apprehensive!

this will be a 'special hols for us to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary last september, when we couldn't get away for 2 weeks, so we've been really looking forward to it and dreaming about it!

We love the Caribbean, we've always been to Antigua, and Jamaica, and so this is our first trip to Tobago, and we thought we'd picked an 'upmarket' 4 star hotel?

Hasn't anyone had a positive experience at this Hotel??

Le Grand Courlan

We left LGC after 2 days and would strongly advise people to avoid it. The beach was filthy and the sun shades are all tatty and falling down. The rooms (we had the jacuzzi room) were all in a poor state and in desparate need of redecoration and renovation.

The a/c unit was too noisy to allow us to sleep, the bathroom was dirty, the tiles and grout around the jacuzzi were broken and dirty. They provided a mini-bar firdge but did not stock it at all - even though we were all inclusive. They do not provide room service. They have filter coffee but no kettle, they provide a perculator but no filter coffee!!!

The sun loungers around the pool were not taken in during the rain, so if you wanted to be by the pool after rain, you had to lie on a soggy matress.

Service poor, facilities poor, beach very bad - this is a dismal hotel, certainally not 4star or luxury.

Le Grand Courlan Feb Holiday

Ian Mackie

Having read recent reports I was concerned as to our holiday which was 2 weeks from 3rd Feb. This was our 3rd visit to Tobago. Contrary to the most recent negative report I can advise that the hotel proved excellent in almost every way. Staff, superb, couldnt do enough for us and always with a smile. Superior to anywhere else I have been in Carribean. Rooms, we had sea view and again very good, bed huge and faclilities in the room also very good with first class turn down service in evening. Bathrooms are however tired and do require update as not to quality of bedroom, same can be said for plumbing but worked fine although noisy. Air condtioning is also ok although a little noisybut nothing to get excited over. Pool area first class with ample loungers of high quality (hotel was full over our holiday) Tennis courts, 2, also in superb condition. Gym was very good with up to date equipment. Didnt use Spa but wife did and found it good although staff here not as service conscious as remainder of hotel. You will find it difficult to change pre booked appointments. Food, again for an all inclusive, quite excellent, mostly silver service in the upstairs resaurant with first class entertainment during and after meals. The buffet style in the downstairs resaurant was more informal but we found the food excellent and plentiful, considerably above the standards of say Rex brand hotels. Lunches were always buffet and very good. Wine flowed freely at all meals and again was of a high quality, merlot or sauvignon. Beer first week was not good but pump problem was solved and 2nd week was of consistent good standard.

Beach is very nice, an excellent walk but you have to be cautious of the breakers. One guest did dislocate his shoulder. Beach loungers are probably limited and of much lower quality that those by the pool but this is a public beach and the facilities provided have to be considered in this respect. Beach touts were almost non existant, certainly not a problem and the overall quality of the beach was very good. Absolutely no sewage outfalls, any water coming onto the beach is from fresh water streams. The buccanear bar is however a poor facility and does require pulling down and rebuilding. You will feel comfortable and safe on this beach and indeed on any beach in Tobago

The dive facility is adjacent to the beach, Adventure Eco Divers and I found it very good indeed. I am a divemaster and anyone using this facility can be assured there is a strong focus on safety. Sure they didnt exactly start bang on 9.00am but everything was well organised and I was considerably impressed with their pool training and subsequent tri dives. If you are a non diver and want to give the sport a go you will be managed very safely and have a lot of fun with this facility. Also absolutley no problems between them and hotel.

In booking with this hotel you can therefore be assured ofa first class holiday, value for your money and a generally strong experience.

Don't Worry!

Having just returned from a stay at Le Grand Courlan, I have to say we are still enjoying the memory of Tobago in general and the hotel in particular. We had been concerned after reading earlier reviews, but having spent two weeks there, we are so glad we went ahead. No hotel anywhere in our experience is perfect, but the tremendous good humour and helpfulness of most of the staff, the delightful situation above a glorious beach and an unexpected bonus 5 minutes walk from a lovely nature reserve, the generally excellent food, and a comfortable, good-sized room, made this a holiday we should be glad to repeat. Where improvements could be made (more loungers and umbrellas, for instance), we know from talking to the hotel management that these are being planned already. This hotel had the feel of being in Tobago, not a plastic bland international chain where one really could be staying anywhere - to us and many other guests we spoke to, a distinct advantage!

Our anticipation of our holiday was spoiled by the very negative reviews we had read. I hope others will look forward to their stay without worrying!
