Our vacation in Tobago ranks amonst the best we ever had. Not only the hotel, but also the beauty of this island, the nice golfcourse and the friendly people made this very special. Against our habit - we never go to the same place twice- we might go back there.
It took some trouble to get the hotel booked - we are Dutch - and tried to get the best price via a local agent, but that was not succesfull because transfering money was a problem as we never got the BIC's right. Fortunately, Mount Irvine Bay hotel accepted our last-minute reservation without any problem. Booking Martinair was no problem at all.
Yes, we enjoyed this hotel, we thought we had the best room with a very nice view, other hotel guests were very friendly (and returning year after year) and the hotel staff just excellent.
Still we are not sure if we should recommend this hotel. There's no entertainment, no shops, no excitement, but we like it that way. Others may not. The hotel is located in a quiet area, but there's a lot nearby. Enjoy!
We went on several boat trips with Frankie's Tours, listened to the steelband at Sunday School at Buccoo, saw Little Tobago, and many beautiful birds, fish and plants and trees.
And yes, the snorkling is fine, right from Mount Irvine Bay Hotel's own beach site.
The best lesson I got from Tobago is: "live life slow", forget your watch and have a nice time.
Mount Irvine Bay Hotel
As a Brit formerly resident in Trinidad I have been staying at Mt Irvine on and off since 1997 and of all the hotels I tried there I kept going back to Mt Irvine. Steve is correct in saying that the reason for the existence of the hotel was originally to offer accommodation near the golf course but today after 30 years it has matured - not for the "party time" tourist but it offers quality and a bit more sophistication than the package deal places. We last stayed there in May '02 whilst we were at Mt Irvine it was quiet and peaceful and I noticed some renovation had been done since our previous stay. The staff staff were friendly, courteous and helpful at all times food excellent ambience chilled out. Personally I do not understand why it is not offered by more tour operators from UK. I reccomend booking a Premium Economy flight on Monarch via Golden Carribean and then room direct with hotel with a little persistence you can get a much better rate than the rack rate published on their website and possibly room upgrade to Garden Cottage for the Superior Room rate in low season.
