Sundowner - Reader Reports & Opinion

We stayed in this wonderful apartment from 18th to 25th November 2009 and itís impossible to do it justice in only 2500 characters!
Firstly, the owners Roger and Annie are so welcoming that you feel as if you are staying with friends rather than in a rental. They provide invaluable local information and lots of laughs as well. We arrived late, but Annie had cooked us a delicious chicken pie. Security can be a problem in isolated rentals in Tobago, so itís a real advantage to stay somewhere that is a proper home - plus the added benefit of three lovely dogs Polly Daisy and Sally (even though they are real softies and incredibly well behaved!)
The location of the house is amazing Ėyou feel like you are living in a tree-house in the rain forest. Itís much more authentic Tobago because you are literally off the beaten track.
If you love birds and wildlife you will be in your element. We got up every morning at 5.00 am to watch the bats hand over to the birds and the dawn chorus begin. Youíll be serenaded by feisty little house wrens, chirping banaquits, tropical mockingbirds and very noisy chachalacas. The antshrikes with their punky hairdos were a favourite of ours, and there was a beautiful jacamar always on the same branch hunting butterflies. Lying in the infinity pool watching a humming bird drinking papaya flower nectar just inches from my face was another high! And there are red squirrels at the bottom of the garden.
Itís great to have all the amenities of a home-away-from-home, with washers and driers so you can launder your clothes after muddy rainforest treks and salty snorkelling trips. Thereís everything you need in the kitchen, and itís such a pleasure to sit on the verandah having supper under the stars.
You will need to rent a car here, but the location is really good for visiting all points of the island. Road signs can be in short supply (the locals all know where theyíre going!) but people hang around at the crossroads and are happy to tell you the way. We recommend any of the boat trips, where youíll be visited by dolphins and swim with the gentle manta rays. A trip to Speyside and the Little Tobago bird reserve is not to be missed where you will see red-billed tropic birds, brown boobys and ospreys. We hope to come back to Tobago really soon, and thank you Roger and Annie for a wonderful stay.

We're conflicted about writing this review accurately because if we tell you how good it really is, you're going to book it, aren't you? And we want it to be fully available the next time we're able to visit. Which we hope is very soon.
This is what we've told our friends. What was great about it is that we felt that we were living in real Tobago rather than in a resort. We bet that when you make that first drive up to Moriah you'll wonder where on earth you're going to end up. And then you'll be shown the view, and the infinity pool, and it will take your breath away. And you'll realise that there are stunning, quiet beaches only 20 or so minutes away, and you're on the edge of a rainforest. And there are coconut trees the other side of the verandah and mangoes falling. Fruit will arrive on your balcony for breakfast. Parrots - yes! - may fly past. Get up early and listen to that dawn chorus.
The accommodation is excellent. We're parents with two teenage daughters, we're pretty well-travelled, we stayed for three weeks and we'd rate the comfort factor at Sundowner very highly. We enjoy cooking, and everything we needed was there. And there's reliable broadband, which we needed for work while on holiday.
What did we like best? Rastafiarian fishermen at Castara. Bread baked in a traditional oven at Castara. Pirate's Bay. Scarborough market. Tobago music. Sunday School at Buccoo. Nylon Pool. A day's sail on Island Girl. Local food at local food stalls. And that gorgeous Sundowner pool! Oh, and Sally the knock-kneed dog.
But the main advantage for us was the presence of Roger and Annie, who are extraordinarily kind and good fun, there with advice, sunblock, gin and tonics, mangoes in the morning and advice on the weather all through the day. And will go the extra mile to make your stay perfect.
Ok, we loved it.
Just don't feel you need to book :)

My boyfriend and I stayed at Sundowner for 5 nights and I have got to say that it was absolutely the best getaway we had. The setting of the villa is so romantic and the views are just breathtaking! The villa is set on the edge of mountain overlooking the sea, we had BRUNCH almost every day out on the veranda since we slept so well who could get up for breakfast!
The accommodations are not like a hotel, it is well equipped with everything you could possibly want, it feels like a home. If you do need anything just give Annie or Roger a shout and they would be more than happy to help. The dishwasher was definitely appreciated since we made quite a mess cooking at night and who wants to waste time washing so much dishes! There is also a washing machine and dryer which in my books were essential for a long stay. Annie I assume was responsible for the eclectic decor and the great attention to detail from the bedrooms to the bathroom!
There is no television but they do have internet access and a radio for your use as well as board games and a bookshelf full of great books. The infinity edge pool is a great place to spend the hot afternoons with a nice cold drink and I can bet money you cannot find a better view anywhere else on the island.
The location of sundowner was a bit tricky to navigate the first couple times but we got the hang of it! Really though nowhere in Tobago is that far! It is approximately 20 minutes from Scarborough and about 30-40 minutes (depends on your driving) to Crown Point. It is ideal for exploring the NE coast since Castara is a mere 15 minutes drive from the villa! Perfect spot for exploring the off beaten track.
Roger and Annie are just the most generous and gracious hosts, along with their 3 well behaved dogs and the cutest little cat called Rosemary! I would definitely recommend Sundowner to anyone who craves serenity and peace on their vacation.
