Road Conditions Off the Beaten Path

Post by Joanne Green »

We don't know whether to rent a 4x4 or a regular car. If we go with the 4x4, we'd want to upgrade to a hardtop, so our belongings will be more secure. Does anyone know what the road is like to, for instance, Hillsborough am? We'd really like to go up and see the caimans.

Hello Joanne

I'm afraid you are probably going to be dissapointed regarding the Hillsborough Dam and the caimans. The public aren't allowed there. Some guides have been able to get permission to take tourists on nature treks there in the past, but I had heard that that had been stopped. Perhaps somebody over there could confirm. However, you certainly can't just drive in there in your own car.

In truth, everywhere you are likely to go with a rented car can be easily accomplished with ANY sort of hire car. Yes, the cheapest cars and 4x4s are just that, so don't expect great comfort. Please check out our Car Rental article for more detail and advice.
