So this is live from Grafton!
By way of background this is our 2nd visit - we were here last year - and things may be changing & not all for the better.....Before we mention the food unfortunately we can't ignore the panic about robberies. Bagoes at Pigeon Point & Church's Chicken (in Scarbro) were both - as we say back home - "knocked-off" by a gang with machettes. This was about 2 weeks ago and the dust ain't settled. Apparently both incidents resulted in trips to hospital for injuries - including a customer.
We're not sure whether the response is reassuring us or having the opposite effect. In Bagoes - for "protection of customers" - we found a security guard sat at the bar with a bullet proof jacket and a pump action shotgun across his lap. This does not make for relaxation and liming....
Nearly everywhere has someone on the door, even some very up-market places.
This isn't bothering us - its probably safer than back home - but all the same its really sad as we saw nothing like this last time we were here. Lets hope the panic passes.
Anyway this is supposed to be about food. So:-
Bamboo Mile - great new addition. Laid back but a bit more up market than the average. More locals than tourists. Service the night we dined was "erratic" but seems to be better when owner is about. Great spot for a cocktail too.
Bonkers - just come back from a lovely lunch (sorry to make anyone jealous!) - fried fish & a shrimp sandwich both just scoffed were great. Very nice food lunch & night Usual mixed but friendly service.
Taratuga - splendid as ever - great Italian food with prices to match. Bill included a 10% sevice charge - sad some UK customs seem to be spreading.....
Shore Things - lovely as ever - local food done in a really nice way - right on the coast - great for bird watchers. Try a jar of their aubergine chutney.
Seahorse - great service, lovely location, even with lobster it was cheaper than Tartatuga.
Ruby Lu's - new people keeping up the standards. Lovely food & very friendly. Great ribs. Bit concerned thay need more customers (but then again its the quiet season); apparently they had to leave the old Crown Point location as the lease was up & the owner wanted to set up a business selling roti.
Iguana - we haven't ate here yet but deserves a mention as the best cocktails by far. Seems to have been done-up since last year - really nice place now.
Coco Cafe - lovely restaurant - only go if you're ravenous - fried chicken was closer to half a turkey! But unless you want cheese on toast avoid the pizza....
And tonight we're off to La Terrazza - can't wait. Will post more in due course.
