What Money Should We Take?

Post by Vicky »

I am going to Tobago to get married in 2 weeks!! I am taking some family too. Can anyone please advise what money we need to take? Should we take TT Dollars or US Dollars? We will be travelling around Tobago, and staying in various places. Are US Dollars accepted everywhere (including the non-tourist places? Or should we take both US and TT?

Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hello Vicky

Welcome aboard! :D

Have a look at our various articles on the subject - available through the menu bar at the top of the page (Odds & Sods/Money Matters).

The answer is simple: Arrange for a small sum (100 quid or so) of T&T dollars from your bank. If you happen to have some US dollars floating around, then certainly take and use them, but it makes no sense to convert Sterling to US to then suffer further conversion losses when using it in Tobago. We always use ATMs to draw further cash, as and when required - but make sure that your card has a zero balance and that you aren't paying huge interest/charges on cash withdrawals.

Have a great trip.

The USD mostly not accepted in the non-tourist places, some might accept it but their exchange rate might not be so good.

Prices for Tour-guide Trips are set in USD mostly pay in USD but local currency is also OK.

Visa-Mastercards can be used into bigger shops, restaurants and so on.

USD-cash can be used as "an extra reserve" but to bring US and go to a bank to change, that take too much time. The ATM´s are working well in Tobago, so you can easy get local currency.

As you say you are going to get married, than I suppose you will not be to far out, and when travelling on your own by car you can make sure that you will pass an ATM. Mostly of them are in Scarborough and in the Crown Point area but, they have some in other areas too, even in the north.
