buying a car and canvas...

Post by Marlene »

hi all,

We (me and my 2 year old daughter) booked yesterday, juhhuhuh!
we will arrive at tobago in 8 weeks and 5 days and we will stay the whole winter.

i spent the my last days to read all this here, it is really a lot, al ot of good information.

but i still have 2 questions: for me it would be better to buy a car, where can i do this and what are the prices? (the car just have to drive and to be cheap, nothing else ;-) )

and:
is it possible and affordable to buy canvas, brushes and stuff at the island or is it better to bring this from germany?

if anybody have some experience with this, i would be glad for an answer!

thanx a greets from berlin

Hi Marlene,

Your art supplies, you're probably better off bringing yourself. I've seen them in Trinidad, but haven't ever seen decent quality ones here in Tobago, so my suggestion is to bring those with you!

There are several companies (car dealerships) that will help you buy a car, but it's probably better for you to wait until you get here and look through the local papers for a second hand one. There's a huge trade in used cars, so there's normally plenty of choice!

Having a car here isn't an immediate problem, as you can use street taxis when you need a short-journey (for groceries etc!). When I first came here, I used them a lot, and like you, I had a small daughter. Once I got past the initial reservations about doing it (we're all taught never get into a car with a stranger!!), it's a cheap and convenient way to get around!

Dear Marlene, congrats to Your luck! My artist friend Jenny Hilton-Clarke lives past L´Anse Fourmi village and is an accoplished painter. I suggest You bring brushes and paints from Germany. Canvases should be found here. Contact her for advice if and when You run out or use the Internet.

for your art supplies on island (rather than going to trinidad) ask robyn in the mall above gourmet. cant remember the shop name but its right at the end and u cant miss it. alternatively, try the gallery signposted off the highway at lowlands.

cars? - check the locak ads. you will be surprised at the price, i was!! cheaper on trinidad but still costly compared to europe. i had to pay 5x the uk price for my last jeep!! however, itll still draw what you paid for it in 6 months time when you move it on.
