2011 Hurricane Season

Please refer to the above Topic where I will provide updates to disturbances, current and forthcoming.

The recent rain over Tobago has moved on with the Tropical Wave but I expect this Wave could interact with the disturbance in the south-west Caribbean Sea and bring problems for Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti later this week.

How is it looking for next week Paul? We are due down there and have lots of tours planned. Hopefully not too much rain during the day.

Hi Richardus

It is currently quite clear around Tobago but there are 2 Tropical Waves in the Atlantic that I expect to pass Tobago over this weekend and again in the middle of next week.

A Monsoon is also affecting central and western Africa and any Waves from this are likely to affect Tobago by the following weekend.

The last Wave caused about 48 hours of sporadic heavy rain.

Please note that a Tropical Wave does not necessarily bring loads of rain, they are all different and some can pass unnoticed. I will be posting updates on the 2011 Hurricane Topic and providing the usual weekly updates.

If you get some rain it will not spoil your holiday.

I am in Tobago since yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon and have no reason for complaints about the weather.
So far it was partly cloudy and sunny. Tempertures are according to the season and it is a bit steamy.
I must say i LOVE the air conditioner in my new vehicle even more in the rainy season ;-)

Hi Carol

I am back from an Internet free break and that's only because I am too tight to pay 20 Ickyspondoolies a day for Internet access ... Updates as normal from tomorrow.

I see that I have missed a Tropical Storm :?

Hi Paul,
Good for you...internet break and refusal to pay outrageous amounts to use the internet when away!! Happy to hear you plan to keep up the weather reports...I think we all tend to forget you do this for free and take your own personal time to write up a weekly weather report and respond to our sometimes silly (or otherwise) comments.
Cheers, Carol

Hi everyone

Please refer to the 'Hurricane 2011' for updates on a new threat to the Caribbean and (possibly) Tobago late this weekend/early next week.

Trinidad had some good rain this morning, but that subsided after lunch time and we even had a bit
of sunshine in the late afternoon.

As for the hurricane season, i had a look into the statistics of last year.
2010 had 5 (!) hurricanes in October, the last one being "Tomas" from Oct 25th onwards.
So far, 2011 had many named storms but only 4 hurricanes. Looks like something may still
come our way.

Quite true Andy ...

Little activity in the Caribbean ... could this mean high sea temperatures for 2012?

Although only a few Major Hurricanes have developed there has been a fair bit of churning in the tropical Atlantic.

I am not that sure about many more Major Hurricanes this season, the conditions are not that good for the big ones to develop ... I think there will be plenty more smaller Storms that may use up the alphabet ... it has been an active season, just nothing really major.

Maybe just one big one could buck the trend ...

The latest one near the Cape Verde Islands is up against about 60 mph wind shear ... no chance unless it goes south west.

There has been quite some flash flooding in northern Trinidad over the last few days, causing significant damage
to buildings, infrastruture and vehicles especially in the Maraval area.
The wet season isn't quite over yet. Even with the hurricane season ending officially on Nov 30th. , isolated showers
will usually continue during the month of December and into the first half of January.

Yes Andy

It has been quite wet over the last week (see Liquid Sunshine ... you were warned).

But 'isolated showers' happen all year round ... you just getting more of them right now.

November has a history of damaging rains in the south Caribbean ... you may remember the event in 2004 that did more damage than Hurricane Ivan ... this is seasonal and I would expect things to calm down in December.

I just sense that it could be a wetter dry season in 2012 due to the lack of Hurricane activity in the Caribbean in 2011.

I will be there in February ... I am sure the sun will shine then and we can smile and have a beer

Hi All,
Paul as usual, got it right on....weather, typical November. What was the comment "a wet dry season!@#" except for Feb....OK, will plan multiple beach days then! Couldn't go last weekend when it was glorious sunny both Sat & Sun (except for the rogue cloud at Orange Hill)
Monday rain (heavy at times) off and on all day. Today thunder and the rare event...lightning! Thinking Noah's ark as it went on for 45 min or longer...I'm really hoping it will dry up at bit for a beach day,..Nov monsoons get to be a drag!
Have not heard of land slides...hope not
Cheers, Carol

Hi Carol

Unfortunately, the rains continue today and looks very heavy.

This unpredictable weather trough should move out of the way by the weekend or, at least by February

Hi Andy

I think I will settle for the occasional internet moment in an Internet Cafe if I find one.

Look forward to meeting up with you ... I will be arriving with my Carer on 30th January ... I am not sure if the local authorities have been notified yet

Don't worry, the proper authorities have been notified and will be there to meet you on disembarkation. You will recognise them by their white coats and they will gently help transfe you to your padded accommodation for the duration of your stay.

Sod internet cafes - relax and enjoy yourself. How long are you there for? Looks like we might just miss by a few days unless you're staying more than 2 weeks. Pity! Anyway ENJOY and forget about the weather. You deserve a break.
