Electrical Goods from UK

Post by Christine Nelson »

Hi

Can anyone help me.I am sending a container over to Tobago and want to know if Uk electrical goods work over there with adaptors ie TV,Fridge Freezer.
I know I can purchase over there but as I already have all of these items I thought if they worked I would pack them in my container.

Thanks Chris.

Hi Christine

Tobago has a mixture of 240v and 110v, but the standard is 110v. Unless the property is wired for 240v I would have though there is no way of running major items like TV, fridge or freezer on 110v. Have you tried running a 240v hairdryer on 110v? It works, but it just doesn't get very hot or blow very hard. It's like 240v travel kettles. They'll eventually boil the water, but it will take a heck of a lot longer.

The first thing I do when I get to Tobago is to ask for any TVs in the room/property to be removed, so I'm the wrong guy to ask. Only joking, of course, but that's how I feel.

There are two aspects to this - will it run on 110v and will it connect to local TVs. I imagine that most DVD players - and certainly all the small portable ones - will run off 110-240v, so you should be OK. Internally they all run at very low voltage I believe. Interfacing with the TV might be a different story because I believe tellies over there use the lower resolution American NTSC system and your player, presumable outputs PAL. I'm no expert in this, so hopefully somebody else can comment from a more knowledgeable point of view.

hello christine

I guess your dvd question was not about the power...
to watch UK dvd's here you need a "multizone" dvd player. this is able to show dvd's from all over the world.
purchased one in trinidad (special offer 550TT$) works well...
powerwise you must let them wire your house 220V and change all the plugs (available in the electrical shop).

hope you are getting through
