Just to update: the letter to Virgin didn't work! They have referred us back to our agent.

On a positive note though I have found that even though I have booked through Thomson's I can get the air miles. This is definitely worth having because I've found that you only need 20,000 to upgrade to PE for free (we get 9,000 each for this trip). Not much use at the moment but as we like using Virgin and like long haul trips, it shouldn't take long to muster enough miles up.
