I must apologise to you and also to Rusty. Some of the FADs were definitely his - I cannot swear that they were all his - that was my assumption and I'm quite clearly wrong.

I also agree that many of the local fishermen work very hard - I think my point should have been that some work harder than others..sorry again.

I gladly eat humble fish pie.

The one thing we can agree on is that Rusty is a very good fisherman but that goes for the majority of fishermen in Tobago.

lets get this straight:
rusty used to have one FAD, that dissapeard about a month ago... now he does not own any of the FADs out there
all the FAD's are owned by other fishermen around the island.

you own a FAD but you don't own the fishes around it, so every fisherman can fish where he likes to... it is just not very nice to be at the FADs before the owners every day... they have the work to put it out (and I know what I'm talking about) and someone else makes use of it

maybe it is a bit hard to see from the outsiders perspective that ALL fishermen are in fact hard workers. most of the fishermen would be happy to take you out sometime to see what they really do out there, but beware you must be a good helper... chester, I think you should take him!

Hi Stephen,

I am a regular visitor to Castara where my partner & I have a working boat. However, as I need help to even get in or out of it I certainly do not have the beginnings of knowledge to answer fishing points.

What I do know from experience and sharing discussions with friends, listening and watching these guys & their families is there most certainly is no such thing as a less hard working Fisherman.

ALL the Fishermen work very hard with their business and their quiet modesty maybe the only reason why you may not see just how much they all put back in to support their families and keep their community and this trade together.

Stephen H, being in Castara from the 14/04 -28-04, I looked at you and thought, I know his face, must be off the television, I wont speak as he will be embarrassed, I have just realised whom I didn't speak to

When you when you were in Castara, there was a huge shoal of bait fish just off the mouth of the bay, there was also a large shoal of Barracuda exploiting them, as I was snorkeling amongst them I didn't tell anyone, but you beat me, I/we got married at Englishman's Bay one evening and spent half the holiday there, but I missed the Bottle nose Dolphins.

I must say that I was there when the local fishermen brought in a catch of MIA MIA, that night we ate at the Hilton were they were serving up locally caught MAI MIA fresh from Castara at 18US a piece. Bet the fishermen didn't get anywhere near that.
