Morning Carol (eeeee)
I couldn't possibly improve on the advice given by the experts here, so I'll just endorse what they say.
We tried that hill down, and up!! to Little, or Heavenly Bay. It's OK if your'e young ( my teenagers) or fit ( my husband, who cycles 18 miles a day ) and can cope with the heat; preferably all three. None apply to me, being less young than I used to be, and more rotund than I used to be, and less able to cope with the heat than I used to. I am hazarding a guess that you are younger than my 51 years? (I don't care who knows!)
Going down the hill isn't too bad, until you feel that you're going to break into an undignified gallop, but coming up!!!! I'm surprised I'm not still there now, trying to crawl up it...
I would definitely consider getting your own snorkelling kit. None of us had even thought about snorkelling, never having done it before, and I never thought I would, having had a chronically dull and unadventurous youth :-({|=
The first time was on a trip to No Mans Land, when we borrowed kit, and myself and son couldn't cope with it at all. Daughter and husband took to it like the proverbial fish to water however.
We tried again with kit provided in the house, and managed much better. We never bothered with fins, I suppose it depends on how serious you are.
I remember, I think it was in Parlatuvier, daughter thought she saw a shark, something she has a fear of, though you don't see many around here. She would have given that Australian bloke with size 17 feet something to think about!
By the way, how do you stop yourself scratching your legs on the coral when you are short sighted and can't see where you're going?
Bill is right about the healthy diet. Fruit jumps off the trees at you and you live on barbecued chicken and fresh fish. There was an avocado tree near us with the biggest avocados I have ever seen. Not ripe unfortunately.
When we went to No Mans land the barbeque was an oil drum cut lengthwise with a wire grill, and wood and dried grass etc collected from the beach. Ingenious!

I may eventually compose my diary at home for my own enjoyment, but it may be too much to digest in one lump in one thread. We'll see! Besides, the more posts I make, the more chance I have of reaching "Oh, so sad!"
It's only fair to tell you to it's best to look elsewhere for restaurant reviews( of which there are plenty) as we only ate at Sunday School, Margurites, Cascreole, Englishmans Bay (DON'T :!: :!: :!: :!: See Out and About, Beaches and Bays) and a couple of rotis from D'Almond tree.
We had to watch the budget, you see. :(
I might do a mini review at some stage. Did I say mini?
That's all folks!

Hi all,

If you're shortsighted and want to see where you're going when snorkling, it is possible to get facemasks with presecription lenses! Tesco direct have them in their latest catalogue. They're not cheap - each lens costs about £10 (I think) and then you have to get the mask to fit them into - but it's worth it if you want to see the underwater world in all it's glory. (At least you can get different lens powers for each eye if you need them.) Of course, if you wear contact lenses - if you're careful, you can get away with wearing them behind the protection of your mask - as long as your mask fits properly and doesn't flood. (Probably more practical if you wear disposables which matter less if you lose them!)

Oh well - back to work!

Helloooo well thanks everyone lots to digest there!

Thanks for the tips on places for "limin" David, I am sure we will be seeing you there then

I wear contact lenses too so snorkelling may be a bit tricky but might take Jane's advice (think it was Jane anyway can't rem) and buy some goggles and snorkel here. I can't swim very well so will prob need flippers too but maybe try and get them there save dragging them over!

I've been reading about Englishmans Bay and will maybe avoid it, don't like the sound of the stories there!

Also worried about these darn sand flies, sounds like I am going to get eaten alive!!! I guess its better to have a sunbed on the beach than to sit on the sand then?!

Peter will start my liver training programme now then, or maybe I will take some milk thistle supplements with me, they are supposed to be good for the liver when you have had a few too many!

Oooooh wish I was going now!

Carole eeeeee

P.S. Carol I am 38! Might make it up the hill or over it, but prob not, am sure the heat will get me first!

Hmmm .. that Hill.

It is easier to go up than down ... if you go down you can't stop and just as exhausting ... and there is a little short cut before you reach the top which is tempting and, yet, potentially deadly.

But the swim from the main bay to Heavenly is just as challenging and more refreshing.

Don't avoid Englishmans ... I have read the stories ... it is a beautiful place and I have never had a problem there ... don't let a couple of idiots spoil it ... as everywhere, just have your wits about you.

I use prescription lenses ... they are well worth the cost rather than risk contact lenses ... if you pay for good lenses then you will get a decent mask ... it all falls into place.

Might find out about prescription goggles then.

Paul I understand you are the man in the know about the Naturalist ... do you know if they have safe's in the rooms? Anything else of interest that would be useful to know??

Maybe we will be spending more time on the beach we will be on than tackling this hill/deathly short cut/getting washed away at high tide!!

Carole,

Don't let all this idle chatter deter you. My wife and I are considerably older than you and Paul and we used the shortcut all the time (though not after dark). We did find out the hard way about Pauls advice to carry a waterproof while wading around the point. The coconut bakes we were bringing back from the ladies at the oven weren't too soggy after drying out on the rail of our balcony. but they were a little salty

Hi Carole

The Naturalist has a safe in the poshest apartment (Blue Marlin) above the Cafe on the beach.

If you are staying in the other rooms there are no safes but you only need ask Ancle to keep your spondoolies safe for you.

The only other piece of advice I would give is that you should not wash your feet in Ancle's fishpond unless you can deal with a major 'sense of humour' failure.

He is a lovely man and a good friend of mine.

Take a bottle of Late Bottled Vintage Port for your first night there and have a drink with him and a toast to me (for telling you to take the Port !!) \:D/ .

Thanks Paul, decided to treat ourselves and we will be in the Blue Marlin for most of our stay, it wasn't available for all of it though unfortunately!

Ancle likes a drop of Port then does he?! I spoke to him on the phone yesterday and he sounds a very nice man, laid back as I guess everyone is over there! Not sure who the lady was I spoke to first of all, but she didn't sound too happy!

Will be sure not to wash our feet in the fish pond!

Ahh Bill I will rememeber to take some sort of waterproof bag then for wading round the point!! What is this shortcut exactly though, is it on a cliff edge or something?? Coconut bakes sound good!

Carole

PS Wow how did that happen, I became a Guru and I haven't even been to Tobago yet!

Hi Carole,

I've done that short-cut many times; wearing flip-flops, and after dark! Live dangerously!!

Actually, this year we found that there was a light at the top, so it wasn't nearly so bad.

Coconut bakes are made by the ladies at the clay oven ( if you get there at the right time), and they are scrummy.

Morning David
What's wrong with bodies? we've all got one and ladies innards are more interesting and complex than mens (ahem).
And what's the objection to advice about prescription lenses for goggles? It's very sensible and entirely in keeping with the purpose of this forum
Now, I dare you to try healthboards.com ; a site I discovered by accident and a sure recipe for hypochondria. Then, try googling m......se forum.
Good luck

Er, Paul,
What's this about washing your feet in fishponds? Why on earth would you do that? %*}

Well when there are plenty of taps and showers outside for residents to wash the sand off their feet, Ancle gets understandably upset when someone dips their feet in the fishpond.

He puts alot of care into his fishpond.

And before you ask ... it was not me !!

I was there at the time.Ancle had just completed it..instaled the fish and the land turtles and was planting the various bits and pieces, when as we stood there admiring his achievment, a family(North American) came along and rinsed their feet in the pool! OH DEAR.
Ancle is a nice chap but then?????????????????Especially as there was a runnning house pipe at their feet and they weren't staying there anyway!
So,'tis not proper,
David(getting closer) :D

The world is full of strange people. What did Ancle do? Wrap the hosepipe around their necks? I know I would!
Yours in disbelief

Paul, for a moment there I thought you were insulting David.

Well - you have to admit "Terrapins" sounds as if it could be an insult!

Paul,I know that, but it was what Ancle was calling them,so I styck to his words thinking it might be a local term like tatoo.
