Just got back from 2 weeks at Grafton and thought I'd add my thoughts. I usually suffer badly with bites, and my wife is left alone. I don't know if it is relevant, but I'm very fair skinned and my wife is dark skinned.
Anyway, after reading the various reports, I was a little worried to say the least. I decided to go with Boots 50% deet and some room coils. Unfortunately, I didn't realise until we got there that the room coils were for outdoor use only!
To cut a long story short, the Boots spray did the trick. I only had a total of 6 bites all two weeks, 5 were below the knees and I'll blame the sand-flies after swimming for those. I was fairly regimented about using the spray as recommended in Steve's report and put my success down to that. My wife didn't use any repellant at all and only got about three bites - go figure!
Also, does anyone know if the electronic mosquito repellants (both keyrings and plug-in room ones) as advertised on Ebay and elsewhere actually work, or am I being gullible?
I usually get bitten horribly wherever I go but have a problem with insect repellent sprays as I'm allergic to most of them. I arrived armed with one I hadn't used before, (meant to be hypo allergenic etc etc), and sure enough developed a reaction by the end of the first week so had to stop using it. I didn't fare any better with the one I bought over there either
Interestingly, I got 10 times as many bites during the period I was using repellent as I did after I stopped using it!!
