Sharks

Post by Laura »

Hi everybody,

I haven't read anything about dangerous sharks near Tobago. Is there any danger in Tobago or Grenada? :?
Or are the beaches protected by the coral reef?

And is it true that it's not advisable to go swimming during menstruation? Sorry for the question!

thank you for your information

Hello Laura,
Don't worry, even the sharks are friendly in Tobago. I've never heard of any shark accidents in our waters. You might see the occasional reef shark while scuba diving and if you are really lucky be able to observe a hammerhead around the sisters rocks in Castara. Another common species is the nurse shark,a harmless creature sleeping most of the day.
It is absolutely safe to go for a swim during any period in Tobago

Hi Laura

Patrick is quite right, of course, but he forgot to say that the only dangerous sharks in Tobago are on the beach.

Only joking!

Hi there !!

Yes, like Patrick says. I hear from scuba-divers that they see hammerheads quite frequently at the Sisters off Castara.
But i asked some fishermen and nobody ever heard about a shark
in the bay. A few weeks ago we had a group of Dolphins in the bay.
It was funny to see how fast them boats get crowded and were off
for the "swimming with Dolphins" experience...
One lady cried tears of joy the whole evening long.

Hi Laura,
I saw a few black top reef sharks up to about 2.5m while diving off Speyside last November. Mostly harmless unless your a fish. We did see them feeding on one dive which was lucky as most the time they are a bit sleepy during the day.

I don't think any of the sharks you are likley to get around Tobago will give you any problems at all as they all seem to be the type that stay in deeper water.

Regards
Kevin
