We have just returned from a wonderful two weeks at the Beach House, in Heavenly Bay in Castara.
We have both been to Tobago several times, and agree that this is the best location and accommodation so far. In fact we have booked another two weeks next year.
Castara is a laid-back fishing village, with a few mainly family-run restaurants. Conveniently there is one, the Boathouse, a couple of minutes from the house.
Coconut heights is the large, first floor apartment. Light and airy, it looks out over the sea, and is spacious and very well-equipped. The living room is open at the front (and sides if you want).
Do watch your breakfast! A friendly motmot (a beautiful iridescent bird with an unusual tail) stole a piece of fried egg from my husband's plate one morning. After that we discovered it was amenable to hand-feeding.
For us, the best bit of the day was before and after sunset: watching the hummingbirds clustered round the feeder, to be replaced later by the little bats, and the pelicans diving into the bay.
It was all so lovely that despite our best intentions we only left Castara once, for a snorkelling boat trip. Actually there is excellent snorkelling from the beach in front of the house.
We were fine without a car, although it would have been easy to hire one in the village. There are a few basic shops in Castara itself, a steep but short walk away.
We were efficiently and kindly looked after throughout. Highly recommended.
