Little tobago, goat island and st. Giles
Has anyone been to any or all three of these? I've noted the posts on Little tobago, but am wondering if it's worth going to goat island/ and or St. Giles aswell.

Goat island is private property, you can rent the place for around 1000 USD per day, St. Giles is more like a big rough rock in the sea, you can't go there either. That leaves little Tobago, which is definitely worth a visit. A glass bottom boat or pirogue will take you there from Speyside.

Hi Ellie
We have been to Little Tobago and Goat Island. We took a glass bottom boat (Franks- outside Blue Waters Inn) from Speyside and as it is was the low season and we were the only ones on teh boat they took us to Goat Island as well.
Definately worth going to Little Tobago and Goat Island is nice but small and not much to see really which you won't have seen already - but if you do get a chance go !

Assuming that you are staying in the Crown Point area, or anywhere in the southwestern end of the island, you really need to allow one day for a rainforest tour and one for a trip up the Atlantic coast and across to Little Tobago. Both tours are much better done with guides, the first time - you miss so much if you try to do it on your own. You can drive up there and get guides locally, but you just don't know what you're getting to be frank. If it is your first time, I would strongly, strongly recommend doing tours to both the rainforest and Little Tobago with good guides. It doesn't take much reading in this forum to figure out who are the best guides to go with.

For your info re trips to Little Tobago, two of the three main operators of boat trips go from Blue Waters Inn at Batteaux Bay (a right turn at the far end of Speyside if you're coming from the south). These are with Franks Glassbottom Boat Tours and Top Ranking Tours. They both have desks in the hotel's car park and when we were there (last week!) you could pretty much just turn up and go if you time it right as they don't seem particularly busy. The companies each run a trip out to Little Tobago in the morning (one at 10am, the other at 10.30am) and one in the afternoon (2pm and 2.30pm). What they tend to do is one trip to suit all. The first time we went we wanted to see as much as possible, and we stopped over Angel Reef (in front of Goat Island) on the way out and the guide pointed out the different types of fish through the glass bottom, we then headed on to Little Tobago for birdwatching/rainforest viewing, passing over one of the largest brain corals in the world on the way. On the way back we stopped off at the reef again, this time for snorkelling. Another day we took the same boat (from Franks) and just asked to snorkel. However they were also taking people to Little Tobago so the boat dropped them off first and then took us snorkelling for the hour those people were on the island. We then snorkelled again after picking the couple up. The cost of the Little Tobago and snorkelling combined trip was TT$170 and the snorkelling only trip (without getting off on Little Tobago) was TT$100. Both operators charge pretty much the same rates. The third boat operator goes from besides Jemmas Treehouse Restaurant in the middle of Speyside. Hope this helps. Maria

How long did you get on Little Tabgo? did the guide go with you from the boat? or are you on your own?. As you may remember we are going up for the Bird Watching and other things of course. Just over three weeks now before we are off glad you had a good time. Going back?

Not sure which part of the UK you're in John, but it's been snowing down south the last couple of days which is a bit of a shock to the system to come back to! In answer to your question, the guide from the boat was with us the whole time on Little Tobago, providing information on the plant life and history of the island as well as the birdlife (including pointing out a baby tropic bird on its nest and aswell as baby sheerwater). I think we were there just for just over an hour. Certainly the second time we took Franks boat trip just for snorkelling, we had an hour in the water before having to go back to Little Tobago to pick up the people who'd been on the island. It's plenty of time really, as you get pretty hot and bothered climbing up to the top (you should wear trainers at least, if not walking boots, not loose sandals, as although when we went it was very dry, this meant the soil was very loose under our feet so nearly as slippery as if it was wet, and also take a bottle of water as nothing on island). There are also a limited number of paths they can take you on.
Re your question about going back to Tobago, we don't tend to go back to the same place twice as there are so many places to explore in the world, but we are hoping to go back to the Caribbean as we actually went on this trip because Allan got a couple of weeks work out there (meaning only one of us had to buy flights!) and we tacked the holiday onto the end, and he's now hoping to get a similar posting in one or several of St Lucia/Antigua/Grenada - so fingers crossed! Don't know how they would compare to Tobago but willing to give them a go! Maria
