Bayview Villa, Pleasant Prospect, Tobago

The following review was produced during a 10-night stay at Bayview Villa in March 2015.


Bayview Villa is an attractive three-storey house situated on a steep hillside overlooking Stonehaven Bay.

The house offers three self-catering holiday apartments – one on each floor. Each apartment is fully self-contained and has its own entrance. The property would particularly suit families or small parties of up to thirteen adults.


Situated on Tobago's north-western Caribbean coast, Pleasant Prospect is less than a 20 minute drive from the airport. The hamlet is home to two restaurants, two small bars, a couple of local 'street food' outlets, a pizza house, a small but highly useful mini-mart, plus the only ATM cash machine along this stretch of coast.

The Crown Point beaches of Store Bay and Pigeon Point are beautiful and very popular, but they have become over-commercialised. They can be crowded; excessively so when a cruise liner docks in Scarborough. The beaches along the Caribbean coast are quieter and more natural. Other than one or two beach traders, they are largely free from commercialisation. Bayview Villa is just a short 5-minute walk from stunning Grafton Beach, our favourite swimming and walking beach on Tobago.

The main North Coast road passes in front of the villa. The term 'main road' should not cause concern. The villa's gardens are densely planted and teaming with palms and other tropical trees and shrubs. These do limit the view a little, but they also act as a natural filter to the road noise. You are aware of passing traffic, but it is seldom loud enough to drown the constant bird song or the sound of the surf breaking in Stonehaven Bay.

To get the best from a holiday in Tobago it is generally essential to have your own transport. The island is small, but few properties are within walking distance of more than one or two shops, restaurants, beaches or other facilities. It would be a shame to stay at Bayview without your own transport, but it would be feasible.

Overall, Bayview Villa has as good a location as can be found on Tobago. It is situated within a 15-20 minute drive of all the features in the most popular end of the island and yet ideally placed for touring Tobago's stunningly beautiful northern coastline and rainforest.

The Accommodation

The top floor of Bayview offers a spacious and charming three-bedroom apartment named Captain's Quarters. The middle floor of the house offers a two-bedroom apartment called Middle Deck and the lower level a spacious studio apartment, Crew's Nest.

The main access to the property is via an unsurfaced road above the villa, where there is ample parking. On arrival, you could be forgiven for thinking that Bayview Villa is a low bungalow rather than a three-storey house. The Captain's Quarters are, to all intents and purposes, at street level. External stairs lead down either side of the house to the other two units. There is no internal access between the three apartments. A gate at the bottom of the garden provides access to the wide verge beside the main road; a convenient shortcut to the beach, or shops and restaurants in Pleasant Prospect.

All three apartments are air-conditioned and fully self-contained. Cots, crib/playpens and a fold-up bed are available on request. Although each apartment is on a single level, the nature of the house makes it inappropriate for wheelchair users or those with severe mobility issues.

The villa's strongest features is perhaps the tasteful décor. Each apartment has its own unique charm and ambience and all are furnished and equipped to the same high standard.

Captain's Quarters

Located on the top floor, Captain's Quartersoffer superbly comfortable accommodation for up to six adults.

The three en-suite bedrooms are air-conditioned . The living/dining room opens onto a gorgeous wrap-around veranda with sea views over Stonehaven and Courland Bays and all the way to Plymouth Point.

The apartment provides a gross accommodation floor-space of around 215m2/2,300ft2, including the wrap-around terrace.  The layout of the house is unusual, but works well. The bedrooms are located to the rear of the property. A wide corridor separates them from the central kitchen and large living room, which is at the front (sea-facing) side of the property. The living room is surrounded on three sides by the terrace.  With a high cathedral ceiling and glazed doors and windows on three sides, the living room is light, bright and wonderfully open. Even under the full occupancy of six adults, this apartment would never feel cramped.

One of the most noticeable features of all three Bayview apartments is the beautiful decoration. The owner's pride in the property is self-evident. The living room of Captain's Quarters is beautifully furnished and decorated in a colourful and highly appropriate tropical style. Colourful Caribbean paintings and prints adorn the walls and complement the vibrant cushions of the rattan sofas and armchairs that are cosily grouped around a central coffee table, facing a 40-inch wall-mounted flat screen cable TV with DVD-player.

A stylish wooden, glass-topped table provides comfortable dining for up to six, whilst offering views over the bay. Nearby, a small cane bureau provides the perfect spot for those who need to keep in touch with home or work. Complimentary wireless Internet access is available throughout the villa. The apartment has a landline telephone and guests are welcome to use it for local calls.

There are no fears of getting bored in the Captain's Quarters. The apartment has a bookshelf of novels, a pair of binoculars and a hi-fi unit with radio tuner and CD player, as well as cards, chess and assorted board games.

Three sets of glazed double doors separate the living room from the terrace. When fully opened, the two areas feel like one. The villa faces north. So, the un-shaded front terrace benefits from partial sun throughout the day, but at least one of the covered side terraces is always in shade.

The terrace is superbly furnished and even with a full complement of six adults, it should always be possible to find a quiet corner. In addition to the three comfortable padded recliners, there are two Adirondack wooden chairs and a very attractive and surprisingly comfortable wicker-style seating set with matching table and chairs. Both sides of the terrace have large all-weather tables and chairs and there is a medium-sized gas barbeque unit.

The living area benefits from a very efficient and quiet air-conditioner, plus an overhead ceiling fan. The air-conditioning proved a great way of cooling the room rapidly after returning from the beach or shopping. At other times, we found that the living areas remained comfortable throughout the day as long as we opened the doors as early in the day as possible. The kitchen was the warmest place, but we found that using a floor fan to supplement the overhead ceiling fan kept the room to acceptable levels even with the stove on.

The kitchen is well equipped and everything was spick and span and in perfect working order. The kitchen equipment included a large six-ring bottled gas stove with broiler and griddle; a large 'American' size fridge-freezer; electric blender, kettle, juicer and toaster; a small coffee filter machine, plus an extensive collection of pots, pans, kitchen utensils, crockery, cutlery and glassware. There was also an abundance of cupboards in which to store groceries and supplies.

A small welcome tray consisting of tea bags and evaporated milk had been left. It was also nice to find a supply of basic essentials such as salt, pepper, seasoning, aluminium foil and cling-wrap.    

All three bedrooms are fully en-suite. The 21m2/225ft2 master bedroom suite is undoubtedly the piece de resistance. The excellent, modern air conditioning unit is whisper-quiet and very efficient. The queen-sized bed is surrounded by a beautifully ornate mosquito canopy fastened with decorative tassels. The subtle ivory and gold colours of the furnishings are both romantic and tasteful. The duvet gives the bed a particularly cosy and welcoming look but we changed it for the light blanket we found stored in the wardrobe. We certainly didn't need to disturb the beautiful folds of the artistically draped mosquito net. I know it can be different during the wet season, but during our February and March visits, mosquitoes are seldom an issue. Electric mosquito deterrent burners are provided in each room, but we certainly didn't need them. 

There is no shortage of storage for clothing – even the quantity required for our fairly extended visits. A total of 2.5m of wardrobe space provides ample full-length hanging space plus a row of shelves. A wide 6-drawer dressing table took care of the smaller items.

The spacious en-suite bathroom continues the theme of tasteful decoration. There is a full-size bath, with a wall-mounted showerhead, rather than a walk-in shower. Water pressure was reasonable, but the hot water could run out more rapidly than I would have expected. Despite this, the big 5-inch raindrop showerhead provided an all-encompassing and gentle showering experience. There is also a bidet.

The washbasin is inset into a decorative mosaic tiled vanity unit, with adequate storage space both on the surface, and below. A hairdryer is stored in the vanity unit.  Both hand, bath and beach towels are provided. Like the bed linen, the towels were of good quality and immaculately laundered. The apartments are serviced six days per week and the cheery housekeeper, Cheryl, was both hospitable and efficient. Linen and towels are changed every two or three days depending upon needs. Private arrangements can be made with Cheryl for personal laundry. Guests can also use the housekeeping washer and dryer when Cheryl is not using it for household washing. An ironing board and iron are provided.

The 15m2/160ft2 second bedroom and bathroom is considerably less spacious than the master, but still perfectly adequate. Whilst lacking the decorative mosquito canopy of the master room, it is still an attractive room. It is furnished with two side-by-side single beds that can be configured as one king-size bed, or separate units. The more limited floor space allows for little but a 1.25m wardrobe and a small 3-drawer latticework chest of drawers. The very attractive half-tiled bathroom has the usual trio of pedestal washbasin, toilet and a walk-in shower. All three bedrooms are cooled by very quiet modern split unit air-conditioners.

The 18.4m2/200ft2 third bedroom is a little larger, but almost identical to the second suite. Again, it is furnished with two single beds mounted side by side. The third bedroom also benefits from direct access onto the wrap-around terrace.

Middle Deck

As the name implies, The Middle Deck is located on the middle floor of the house.

The large living room of this very attractive and spacious 2½-bedroom apartment is furnished with wide and comfortable sofa and pair of armchairs focussed around a 30-inch wall mounted flat-screen TV.

The kitchen is raised a few feet above the living area. This split-level arrangement helps to give the apartment an extra touch of individuality. The kitchen is very well equipped with a medium sized fridge-freezer, six ring bottled gas stove with grill (broiler) and griddle, microwave oven, toaster, blender, kettle and a small coffee filter machine. A range of under and over counter units provide lots of room for storage of groceries, etc.

Leading off the upper raised kitchen area is the 14m2/150ft2 master-bedroom suite. This is simply but attractively furnished with a queen-size bed, a dressing table and a small wardrobe. The old air-conditioner mentioned in our previous review has been replaced by a truly excellent Toshiba split unit. The en suitebathroom has the usual trio of facilities – washbasin, walk-in shower and toilet. Everything was well presented and in excellent maintenance order.

The 13.5m2/145ft2 second bedroom suite is accessed from the living area. It has a double bed with bedside tables and lamps and lots of wardrobe space. The bathroom acts as a general powder room for the living area, so is not quite en-suite, but as the doors to the bathroom and bedroom are immediately adjacent, it is as good as en-suite. The bathroom is furnished identically to the master suite bathroom. Like all the other bedrooms at Bayview, a good split unit air-conditioner ensures that guests sleep comfortably.

There is a small single bedroom at the front of the apartment. Fully air-conditioned and furnished with a single bed, the room would be ideal for a single person or child.

Wide double doors separate the living area from a large (7x4m) covered balcony. This offers beautiful views over Stonehaven Bay, the front gardens and the pool area. It is furnished with a circular table with four comfortable-looking rattan chairs, a padded sun recliner, a day bed, an armchair and a bottled gas barbeque unit.

Crew's Nest

It would be hard not to be captivated by this lovely studio apartment. It simply oozes character.

Located on the ground floor of the villa, Crew's Nest is situated immediately adjacent to the swimming pool and just a few steps above the front gate and short walk to the beach. It offers a reasonably spacious 51m2/550ft2 of fully air-conditioned accommodation space and constitutes a very homely holiday pied-à-terre.

The front of the apartment is dominated by a wide terrace furnished with a large circular table with sun umbrella, a comfortable 3-seater padded swinging bench with canopy and two all-weather padded sun recliners. The private terrace benefits from partial or total shade throughout the day and overlooks the lush tropical gardens.

Entering the apartment through the wide double doors, the scene is very romantic and intimate – a description not intended to infer 'cramped'. It would undoubtedly make a wonderful honeymoon suite. Like the larger apartments upstairs, the decoration is colourful, imaginative and very tasteful. You instantly feel at home.

The living area is furnished with two comfortable rattan sofas and matching armchairs facing a flat-screen cable TV with DVD player. A small breakfast bar with high stools separates the living area from the kitchen. Fully self-contained, the kitchen is equipped with a 4-ring bottled gas stove with grill, a medium-sized fridge-freezer, microwave oven, coffee filter machine, electric toaster and kettle. There is a small but adequate collection of crockery, cutlery, glassware and kitchen utensils.

The bathroom and bedroom are located on the other side of the living area and separated from it by a tasteful archway and wood panelled screen. With its decorative mosquito canopy and attractive light-rattan side tables and lamps, the bedroom is truly romantic.

Next to the bed is a small dressing area, with a 1.5m wardrobe, a small dressing table and desk/dresser unit with three storage drawers. The bathroom is small, but has a fully tiled shower with intriguing portholes in the wall.

Gardens & Swimming Pool

Bayview Villa is set in compact, but very lush and mature landscaped grounds. The garden is a riot of colour and attracts a huge collection of tropical birds. Guests share an attractive circular (7m diameter) swimming pool located on the ground floor of the property.  The pool surround has half a dozen padded recliners and matching tables.

The poolside is a lovely place to relax or sunbathe. As guests tend to use the nearby beach, you will invariably have it to yourself.


All the windows of the house, and most doors, are fitted with discrete security grills. The garden gates are padlocked. Guests are issued with keys but, with no on-site management, they must clearly take responsibility for locking gates behind them. Each apartment is fitted with a small security safe. We understand that a full CCTV-based security system is to be installed.

We consider that the villa has achieved a perfectly acceptable balance of basic security without making guests feel that they are staying in a prison.


Bayview Villa clearly boasts an ideal location. It is one of very few rental properties where we can honestly claim that having your own transport is not essential. Bayview is within walking distance of what we consider the best swimming and walking beach on Tobago and the most useful cluster of shops, restaurants and facilities along the lower Caribbean coast.

The Bayview Villa apartments are clean, attractive, comfortable and beautifully furnished and the décor is probably the nicest we have seen on the island.

Put everything together and it is clear that few other properties offer a better overall package. Whether a couple or a larger family group, we feel that Bayview Villa should be on the shortlist for anyone looking for high quality self-catering holiday accommodation in Tobago.

I was traveling with a mixed group of 11 people including 2 seniors and 2 children. As you can imagine it was difficult to find a property that would meet all of our needs but this is it!!! The property looks just like the pictures and was perfect for my group. I had some folks in my group who are from Trinidad and some from Tobago (very hard to impress on their home turf) and even they were pleased! We rented the entire building which was perfect. The local stores and beaches are less than a 5 minute walk from the property. The kitchens had everything we needed to either cook or have catered meals delivered.

The private pool was awesome and saw me and my family everyday! Not too deep so the its not dangerous for kids. The view of the bay is breathtaking and we could not stop taking pictures at sunset! The rooms were clean and the linens were too. Everything worked including the free Wi-FI for those who cannot unplug!

When making the arrangements I dealt with Gillian who was very patient and understanding. Since this was my first time renting a private villa I asked a ridiculous amount of questions and she answered all of them with ease. This experience was great and had all 11 members of my family patting me on the back.

The only note i would make is that the Captains Quarters (top floor) is the entrance level so it was good for seniors and families with kids. The middle deck and crews nest have steps that lead down the side of the building and may be difficult for older travelers.

This property is perfect and we have already started making plans to return next summer!

Hidden Paradise Found!

I was able to book the entire villa for a two night stay in Tobago and from start to finish, Gillian (The Manager) was always warm and accommodating. We booked from Sunday Evening to Tuesday afternoon but unfortunately we missed our boat on Sunday but luckily got on the early boat on Monday. Gillian was quite lovely letting us stay till Wednesday so we'd have our two nights!

Ok, on to the villa! The view will blow you away! Each apartment is beautifully designed and you'll feel like you're right at home. The rooms are spacious and well maintained, we only briefly met Donicia the housekeeper but we could see she put in a great deal of work!

I absolutey would come back to this lovely gem in Tobago!
