Located on the top floor of the house, Captain’s Quarters offer superbly comfortable accommodation for up to six adults.
The three bedrooms are air-conditioned and fully ensuite. The living/dining room opens onto a gorgeous wrap-around veranda with panoramic views over Stonehaven and Courland Bay.
The apartment provides a gross accommodation floor-space of around 215m2/2,300ft2, including the wrap-around terrace. A wide corridor separates the bedrooms from the central kitchen and large living room. The terrace wraps around three sides of the living room. With a high cathedral ceiling and glazed doors on three sides, the living room is light, bright, and wonderfully open.
The owner’s pride in the property is self-evident. The air-conditioned living room of Captain’s Quarters is tastefully furnished and decorated in tropical style. Colourful Caribbean paintings and prints adorn the walls and compliment the vibrant cushions of the rattan sofas and armchairs cosily grouped around a central coffee table. A 40-inch wall-mounted TV connected to the excellent Digicel Play digital service provides entertainment. A DVD player is provided, together with a small collection of novels, binoculars, a hi-fi unit with radio tuner and CD player, as well as cards, chess, and assorted board games.
A stylish glass-topped table with six chairs is available for formal dining. Nearby, a small cane bureau forms an excellent desk for those who need to keep in touch with home or work. Complimentary Wi-Fi access is available throughout the building. The apartment has a landline telephone and guests can receive international calls or make and receive local calls.
The terrace is superbly furnished with a pair of comfortable padded recliners, two Adirondack wooden chairs and an attractive and surprisingly comfortable wicker-style seating set with matching table and chairs. There are large tables and chairs suitable for dining on either side of the terrace, and a medium-sized gas barbeque grill.
The kitchen is well equipped and everything immaculately clean and in good working order. Equipment includes a large six-ring bottled gas stove with broiler and griddle, large ‘American’ size fridge-freezer, electric blender, kettle, juicer and toaster, coffee filter machine, plus an extensive collection of pots, pans, kitchen utensils, crockery, cutlery and glassware.
A small welcome tray contained tea bags and evaporated milk. It was also nice to find a supply of essentials, such as salt, pepper, seasoning, aluminium foil and cling-wrap.
All three bedrooms are air-conditioned and ensuite. The master bedroom suite is undoubtedly the piece de resistance. The queen-sized bed is surrounded by a beautifully ornate mosquito canopy fastened with decorative tassels. The overall décor both romantic and tasteful. The duvet gives the bed a particularly cosy and welcoming look. We had no need to disturb the folds of the artistically draped mosquito net, as mosquitoes were conspicuous by their absence, although electric deterrent burners were available in each room.
Some 2½m of wardrobe space provides ample full-length hanging and shelf storage. A wide 6-drawer dressing table is ideal for smaller items.
The spacious ensuite bathroom has a full-size bath, with wall-mounted showerhead. Water pressure was not a strong point and the hot water supply a little erratic. However, the big 5-inch raindrop showerhead provided an all-encompassing and gentle cascade. The bathroom also features a bidet. The washbasin is inset into a decorative mosaic tiled vanity unit, with extensive storage space both above and below the surface. A hairdryer is stored in the vanity unit.
Hand, bath, and beach towels are provided in all three apartments. Like the bed linen, the towels were of good quality and immaculately laundered. The apartments are serviced six days per week and the cheery housekeeper was both hospitable and efficient. Linen and towels are changed every two or three days depending upon needs. Private laundry services can be arranged with the housekeeper, or the main washer and dryer used by guests when not in use for household washing. An ironing board and iron are naturally available.
The very attractive second bedroom is furnished with two single beds. These can be configured as separate units, or a king-size bed. The more limited floor space limits furnishings to a 1.25m wardrobe and small 3-drawer latticework chest of drawers. The attractive ensuite half-tiled bathroom has the usual trio of washbasin, toilet, and a walk-in shower.
The third bedroom is slightly larger, but almost identical to the second. Again, it is furnished with two single beds mounted side by side. It also benefits from direct access onto the wrap-around terrace.
