Angling in Tobago!

Post by Ian Newell »

I'm not an intrepid angler, but I do love dangling my pole  in exotic locations.

I had a dabble in Barbados, which was great, but caught zilch.

I'm not bringing loads of gear, just a spinning rod, a few wire traces (Cuda and all that) plus some spinners.

Any of you people been lucky enough to catch something whilst holidaying in paradise?

I'm staying in the Coco Reef, so any tips of good spots.

Hello Ian,

Being a boat angler with a passion for exotic fish, I also like to fish for the hard fighting fishes of the shallows. The last time I visited Tobago I took a spinning rod and some artificial lures like small rapala’s, spoons and rubber sand eels.
I caught several jacks and snappers on the rapala’s, small barracuda and jacks on spoons.
Good spot to fish is at day break on the beaches off Sandy point, the beach between Buccoo and Pigeon point.
Look for the shoals of small fish (you can see the slight disturbance of the water pattern) or the diving birds. Sneak up and try to get your bait in that area.
Another nice place to fish is from the rocks at Black Rock. Be careful there. Use rapala’s early in the morning this is a good place to catch a big snapper. Be patience.

Hope you catch some….
Cheers
