scanning the posts tonite. saw a reference to Crown Point as 'the grottyest part of the island.'
intriguing comment, since we are booked to stay there (sandy point beach club) for a week in may.
is it true?
Hello T,
I would rather say: most commercialised area of Tobago, but that's a so relative term for Tobago that in other words you could say: the area where Tobago's local atmosphere is less tangible than in some other areas. The reason why it is more commercialised must have something to do with some very attractive qualities, that haven't disappeared during recent touristic developments for let's say the last 5 years or so.
At the same time I would encourage you to hire a car, at least for a few days, to discover the whole of the island, which hides many different aspects, regarding physical landscape and (local) atmosphere.
Enjoy your stay and spend a few hours to prepare a little, this site offers enough information to make the most of Tobago.
thanks, roel:
we do plan to trek all over the island, but we also were set on spending some time at store bay and (gasp!) pigeon point, plus take in a meal at dillon's and other crown point-area places.
alas, we're from america, so nothing could be too shocking.
Hi T:
We stayed in the area last March and I have to say that I didn't feel it was "grotty" at all. We had a great meal at Dillon's. Wish we were heading back to Tobago again this year, but alas no. Enjoy!
As the source of the comment I guess the misty haze of returning home probably coloured my opinion and Roel's reply did sum the area up fairly well.
In my defence I would say that whenever we ventured there the roads were busy, the landscape flat and uninteresting, there was a mish-mash of development and consequently sparse vegetation. However, it was in no way dangerous and there appeared to be a good collection of restaurants - Dillon's, V Good; Panache, food excellent, service abysmal.
Explore the rest of the island and hopefully you will see what I mean.
We've stayed at Sandy Point Beach Club for four holidays, and you'll love it! A month...I'm jealous. Crown Point, as others have said, is the most commercial part of the island, but this can be a good thing for some people. Great restaurants within walking or short driving distance, places were you can hang with the locals, like late night at the Golden Star and Diver's Den. And Sandy Point is a great place to make friends -- the staff are wonderful and we miss them already (only been back a week!). We love Store Bay and Pigeon Point, despite the tourists (although try to avoid Pigeon Point when a cruise ship is in, it totally changes the place). Definitely drive around and experience all that Tobago has to offer. Hike in the rainforest, take a catamaran cruise, snorkle or dive. You know, it all depends on what you like. We went to Castara and several of my friends said they could never stay there for an extended period. Too quiet and too remote.
