Turtle watching

Post by Nicola Macbride »

Hi

We are flying out on Monday, fully equipped with 50% Deet, antihistamine and those clicky things, and thanks to this site, clear instructions to get the RED can of 'Off' (although I'm sure the sandflies can't be as bad as the Scottish midge!)

Anyway, read the posting about the first sighting of turtles and we would love to see them, but have not booked any accommodation on those beaches. Is there another way we can watch the turtles without having to book into an expensive hotel?

Hi Nicola

Welcome aboard!

What a challenge. Trying standing on the beach for an hour around half-an-hour before sunset without any deterent. Mind you, sods law will dictate that you're one of the lucky sods not affected.

All the beaches are public, so watching turtles nest is not simply for guests of those hotels. The problem is finding out when one has come ashore.

I suggest you telephone SOS Tobago (Save Our SeaTurtles) on 639-9669 or 639-0026 once you get over there. They operate a turtle watch. I am writing to them for more info, but I believe that they will contact you when a sighting has been made - then its a matter of hot-footing over to the beach.

Good luck!

Thanks Steve

So now all we need to know is how they can contact us. We have quad band mobiles, will they work?

Excellent site, by the way.

On a totally unrelated matter, is there anything as sophisticated as a left luggage service at the airport? We have a whole day where we may end up having to lug bags around before our flight home.

regards

Nicola

Hi Nicola

Yes, your mobiles should work.

No, I don't believe there is a left luggage service at the airport. To be honest, that's the first time the question has been raised - most surprisingly. There certainly should be one, but I've never noticed any signs for one and can't envisage where it might be if there is one. If anybody knows differently, please shout.

Are you hiring a car? If you hire a car for a week or more from Sheppy (our 'recommended' rental agency), then he has just introduced a very nice little shower room and left luggage service for departing guests. Brilliant idea as his yard is only 5 minutes walk from the airport.
