Hi Pete

Local calls are effectively free - there's a cost of TT$0.23 for unlimited time, day or evening, around Tobago. Calls to Trinidad are 23c for 20 seconds during the day, or 23c for 60 seconds evening.

You would need to contact your hotel to find out about their charges as every hotel probably charges different rates. If my experiences are anything to go by, they probably charge about £23 per second. Frankly, given the above costs, they ought to be free, but every hotel I've ever stayed at still continues to rip punters off on telephone charges.

I'm afraid I don't know the cost of calls from public phone boxes.

Local phone calls

Post by Ronald »

The best thing to do is to buy a phone card, instead of using coins, because these phones (for coins only) are often out of service. These phone cards can also be used for calls outside T&T. The cards are avaiable at many places.

Myself did buy a cell phone in Tobago some years ago, so by using phone cards and the cell phone, my friends can reach me and I don´t have to walk around to fine a phone.

I happened to have my hotel bill from February handy. I made several local calls; most were to make restaurant reservations. The calls averaged US$1 (about 6TT to 1US$, probably less at the hotel exchange rate). The Hilton statement doesn't give the length of the calls, but I'd guess 3 or 4 minutes each or thereabouts.
Also, I tried to use a coin phone once in Trinidad to call Tobago. I remember understanding that I was to drop in some coins, which I did. I reached my number in Tobago, but I kept getting cut off after about a minute. There was no voice saying, "Your minute is up, deposit more money." So I goofed up somehow, but I don't know what I should have done.

At the Inn on the Bay, we paid $6TT for 3 minutes on the calls that we made. Didn't think that was too bad for hotel charged calls.

I pay 3 TT$ for about 4 international calls (each about 5 minutes) and 2 national calls. I wondered about the price but the reception said that that´s normal.
