Can anyone quote approx Taxi fares
e.g Airport to say Rex or Rex to Sunday School or out to eat.
Can you book a Taxi driver for the day any ideas on cost, this we have done many times in other places at very reasonable rates gives me a rest from driving and allows me to have a noggin or to.

Hi there. Airport to Rex used to be circa 60 tt$ (about £6.50) but it may have gone up. Use the official airport taxi drivers in the queue outside arrivals, or cross the road to reach haggleable drivers, who should have a H number plate to be legal taxis. You can chat up the drivers for daily rates, but you can hire them for the day and prices start at about usd $25 depending on how long your day is, distance etc. Getting taxis to and from Sunday School is easy, simply stand in the road and flag a route taxi for v cheap local rates. When you wish to return late at night you will find locals trying to earn a few dollars with their private cars - make sure they appear sober before using them, or pre-book a return taxi. Have fun!

Hi, Glynn that which we know as "PH" taxis is illegal on both islands as you are well aware. We should exercise more care in our suggestions to visitors. pre-arranged taxi from sundayschool is safer and inexpensive. john martyr.[/i][/b]

John, while you are technically right, in practical terms it is sometimes difficult to get a "legal" taxi home in the small hours on Tobago, an island where taxi drivers rarely get business at night so often don't work. On one occasion my driver refused to return to collect my group, on another he did then failed to show and had his cell-phone off. Standing by the road at 04:00 is never pleasant, tired and emotional, so accepting a lift home from a hard-up local who appears sober and to have a safe vehicle must be safer than whistling in the wind? That said, even though sex crimes and robberies are extremely rare on Tobago I agree with you that unofficial taxis should be avoided by singles, and I suppose a pay-phone call to a decent hotel might yield some help, but those staying in s/c or guest-houses are likely to get no reply at that time of night and really would be stuck. Further, on several occasions I have been charged at least double the going rate by legal taxis (english accent you see) so will always haggle the fare in advance and, as you and I both suggested, arrange a return collection if possible and in the hope that the driver will show up. Could you help readers (and me) by advising on the official government complaints procedure for licensed taxi drivers? Regards, Glyn
