Monkeys

Post by Barry »

Could anyone help with a question posed by one of my children? Are there any monkeys in the Rainforest? I seem to recall reading recently that there are primates of some description on Trinidad but can't recall whether Tobago was mentioned. I have scoured the web for info on mammals of Tobago but, unlike the birdlife, there is little information. Perhaps our forebears ate everything that couldn't fly. We are visiting in May and any local knowledge on wildlife would be welcome.

Thanks

8) There are possssibly still some Howler Monkeys on Trinidad and they occupy a diminishing part of the Northern range of hills running East to West to the North of Port of Spain. I heard them when I was working in Trinidad I think but never actually saw one. A few years ago a brand of strong beer was launched called Howler as far as I know its prospects of survival were about the same as the monkey's. On Tobago there are no monkeys that I am aware of.

 When replying to messages first check your facts or in my case my 1997 diary then Yahoo! Nariva River on the east coast of Trinidad is one of the main waterways of the Nariva Swamp, home of the Red-Bellied Macaw, Red-howler and Capuchin Monkeys and the extremely rare Manatee or Sea Cow. The area is a protected and is a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, which is an international treaty developed to protect wetlands throughout the world.[/quote]

Hi Barry

With all due respect to Ian, we'll forget about Trinidad - this site is strictly reserved for Tobago.

I understand that there are NO monkeys in Tobago's rainforest and haven't been for many years.

Keep smiling
