Getting around by buses?

Post by Dave »

Does anybody know, if is possible getting around in Tobago by public buses? I think something like that in Grenada (where I was last year and it was perfect : public buses-minivans- everywhere and no problem to get anywhere on island. ). I love this type of transport without responsibility for car and ,sure, is much cheaper. But everywhere is : rent a car in Tobago. In Tobago i think I will stay next to Pigeon point and I would want going to Englishman Bay, Castara,Speyside, and rain forests in central part of island.
I really don´t want to hire a car...

Thank you for your replies. David,Czech republic

Hello David

Have a look at the “Taxis and Public Transport” section of our main myTobago.info site – http://www.myTobago.info/taxis.php as this will give you general information about public transport on Tobago.

There are bus services between Scarborough and each of the major towns (think of them as villages more than towns), but the bus service is infrequent and they do not run to regular timetables in the way that I'm sure they do in the major areas of the Czech Republic. I’m sure that someone will hopefully correct me if I’m wrong, but I would be surprised to hear that buses ran along the north coast to places like Castara and Englishman’s Bay or across the rain forest and if they do, they will be extremely infrequent (a bit like our bus services here in the Essex/Suffolk borders here in England).

The normal mode of public transport in rural Tobago is to simply hail passing vehicles. In the more remote areas it is customary to give people a lift. In the more populated areas, hire cars (which carry registration plates starting with the letter “H”) ply all major routes and stop and pick up paying passengers if they have room.
