Phoning home

Post by Angela S »

Whilst on holiday we will need to phone home a few times to check on elderly parents. what is the best (cheapest way) of doing this?

This is my first post so please excuse any mistakes. Brilliant site.

Hi Angela :)

The best option I have found in the past but not from Tobago I might add is to text via mobile phone, but I have heard that UK mobile phone do not work in tobago due to no agreement between relevant parties, perhaps someone can confirm this !! ?

The next best option can be e-mail and make arrangements with parties at home to send at certain times/day so they can respond back while you are still on line ! or if you not too far from Internet cafe then check back later in the day.

If calls are as expensive as Cuba was then I'm afraid i would find the hotel number where you are staying and get them to phone you because that is cheaper than you phoning to the UK.

Hope it helps and someone can fill in the gaps

enjoy your holiday

I can confirm what Warren said about the mobile phones - UK ones won't work in Tobago. We communicated by e-mail and there are various internet cafes around which are reasonable. I would avoid the hotel internet facilities - the ones I used were very expensive in comparison to public internet cafes. Others may be able to advise on how expensive it is to phone the UK from Tobago. I made a short call from the hotel and it was not too expensive, though I'm sure there are cheaper options.

Hello Angela, you can buy phone-cards up to tt$100 then dail from any phone including pay-phones in hotel lobbys, keying in the card numbers. You will get about 7 minutes talk time from a tt$30 card (just over £3), which is pretty good value. It is probably easier in your circumstances to buy $100 cards, which will last quite a while for several separate calls. Have fun, Glyn Kirpalani
