Serious Problems in Tobago

Post by Andy Roberts »

Sorry to alarm Visitors to Tobago  ,but there is a beer shortage on the Island. I don't want to restart the Stag vs Carib debate but both are increasingly scarce.

Having just returned from 2 weeks in a Villa, where a liberal supply of the liquid helps ease the time away by the poolside, I had resort to Heineken on several occasions. I tried all my usual sources ranging from Supermarkets to bars, Pennysavers being the best bet, but they only had limited stock on a couple of visits. Bars are keeping their stock for the own customers.

It all stems from a problem in the Brewery in Trinidad apparently

You have been warned.

Heavens, this is SERIOUS!

We shall have to form a 'Watch' committee to keep an eye on things and post bulletins for our readers. Strange that you could get Heineken. Its brewed at the same factory as Stag and Carib I believe.

Hopefully its just a short-term problem. I'll try not to start panicking - there's still 3 months to go till I arrive.

every bottle of "liquid gold" (yummy) has to come over from trinidad via boat. sometimes they do not get the truck on because they have a technical problem (especially with the old boats, mostly responsible for cargo). but if we have a shortage it never lasts. saw a lot of bottles in cans in morsetts the other week and definately carried out enough empties from our guests these days (no shame in that, karen  )
come to castara, seems we got it all here

There were a few cans in PennySavers, but somehow it just doesn't seem to taste the same as straight out of the bottle.

Steve, Heineken is brewed in St Lucia, or at least that's what it said on the bottle.

I stand corrected. :?

Maybe the old brain is going (no comment please), but I was sure that it was brewed, under licence, in Trinidad, by Carib Breweries (part of the Ansa McAl group that also owned Pigeon Point) that also makes Stag and Carib. They're active throughout the southern Caribbean region, so maybe they have a bottling facility in St Lucia as well?

Jill

I think it's Tiger beer in the Maldives - very nice if not exactly Stag or Carib!

Hi Jill,
It is Tiger, very nice it is to from Singapore, on positive note you can get it in bigger bottles and the strength is somewhere between Stag & Carib,

Can't say I noted any shortage last week In Tobago the Carib Man was making his usual deliveries to BWI.

Hi Brian and Steph,

you see what happens when you treat poor visitors back home like this. Just make sure you have Carib when I come after Easter 2006

Gisela

Knowing that you don't mix your drinks, if the Carib's out of stock you'll have to stick with rum all night at Wallace's instead!

Hope all well with you - haven't forgotten those photos.

By the way, just try Mackeson. It's darker, and definitely stronger, than both Stag and Carib. Definitely a man's beer. 8)

If anyone is interested you can order Carib Beer online in the UK too from http://www.foreignbeerimports.co.uk

Just the thing for that Caribbean barbeque in the summer.
