Just Returned

Post by Pete Mancini »

We have just returned from our first trip to Tobago and wanted to give our report. We stayed for ten days in various locations around the island. We arrived on New Year' s Eve and rented a car from Sheppy who was friendly and accomodating. Then we had the pleasure of driving the dark, winding, unpredictable, and very busy road (with partiers) to Castara Bay where we stayed with Adam and family at Sandcastles.

Although we were exhausted and stressed from the previous day's travels, Adam's warm hospitality, delicious and nurturing food, and fun conversation made us feel like we were truly on vacation finally. *Note to travelers: Travelers checks are not very useful in Tobago...especially if you arrive at the beginning of a holiday weekend :!: . Fortunately, we had acquired some TT$ before leaving the US. Nothing was opened anyways so there was nowhere to buy groceries etc. But Adam was so helpful and was able to provide meals and really bailed us out of a pinch. He is plannning to open a restaurant on the premises and enjoyed testing his creations on us which we didn't mind. We enjoyed the fabulous and quiet location, the friendly and comforting presence of Big Boy, their sweet yellow dog, the colorful birds that would come to our porch, and the company. There had been some burglaries in Castara's guesthouses recently but Sandcastles was not touched...certainly Big Boy had something to do with that! The space would be especially suited to two couples who want to share the common area.

Next we went to Cuffie River Retreat where we especially enjoyed the tours with Desmond and the meals. Regina was very helpful and kind enough to cash some our traveller's checks. Beautiful setting and countless birds.

We made our way to Charlotteville and snorkeled with Frank's tours (at Blue Waters) which was awesome! We wanted to go a second time but were rained out.
We spent four nights at Rosa's in Charlotteville. The location was great and town very charming and full of kind people. Pirates Bay is a treasure and we hope that it remains undeveloped and pristine. Special thanks to Captain Curtis of Workshop Tours, I had a great day fishing with him and the price was right. I can't wait to get back there to fish on his newly renovated boat with him. Sharon and Pheob's was some of the best food we had on the island. Check it out.

We wrapped up the trip in Crown Point at Toucan Inn. Quiet and pleasant ,but a dark room with air-conditioning was a downer after sleeping next to the beach with the windows opened. We bought our gifts and found the markets to be friendly. We didn't need to stay very long in Crown Point and perhaps this eased the pain of leaving Tobago as we were ready to go home at that point.

We hope to return in the future when time and money allow.

Peace to ALL, :P
