What a nice person you are - rum from Trinidad/Tobago will be a very acceptable gift I'm sure!
We liked "White Oak" as an all purpose white rum - rather like Bacardi in character. There are numerous golden and dark rums. It all comes down to taste with these - some are more caramel tasting than others.
If you go through Piarco airport - rum in the airside duty free shops is very cheap indeed (especially compared to the prices we pay in the UK with taxes and duty).
Enjoy!

I have just returned from Tobago and brought home two bottles of Rum (Thats the limit) One was Bacardi and the other was the Forres Park Puncheon Rum! It states 'Not less than 75% Alc/Vol'on the bottle! It is ROCKET FUEL, BE WARNED!
It gets you drunk very very quickly from the legs up!
And it's only $56TT

if you don't want a hangover with puncheon rum, you chase it with cold water. do not mix it with anything sweet like coke.
you should be fine the next day. goes good with carib chasers also.
if in fact you are hungover, you simply need more of the "dog that bit you" in the morning and you won't notice.
i am a retired rumaholic. at least until the next time. . .

I must have died and gone to heaven! A thread for fans of Puncheon run!! WOOHOO.
Romana asked about the next day. Well Ramona, I'm the most sensitive person on the planet when it comes to getting a hangover. 1 glass of wine and I'm sick. More than 2 Caribs and I'm sick. A glass of scotch and I'm sick. It's terrible, I can hardly drink anything without getting deathly sick.
I have been drinking Puncheon for a decade (on the advice of my father in law). I have gotten myself paralyzed from the eye balls down with it on many occasions. It's a marvelous analgesic, but manages not to impair your mind too much. I've mixed it with everything under the sun, especially Coca Cola (it's hard to sing the song without it). I usually start sipping it around 10:00 am and sip it straight through 'till nightfall. It has a remarkable ability to keep you cool in the tropical heat. I know many very very old people in Trinidad who drink it every day and swear it is their secret to longevity (most of them drink it pure).
I have never had a single hangover from Puncheon. Not even a hint of one. The only side effect is a bit of a dry mouth the next day. All the local Puncheon afficionados claim that the purity of Puncheon is what makes it such a gentle drink. I tend to agree. From my experience, the more darkness the drink has, the more additives and flavors the drink has the harsher the side effects the next day.
I strongly recommend sipping Puncheon throughout the day rather than gulping it during a short sitting. Being 150 proof (75% alcohol) it does pack a stiff punch! Maybe that's why it's called Puncheon (-:
Anyone getting a hangover should blame the other stuff they drank that same day. I know of no one getting sick on Puncheon alone.
As mentioned, some airlines no longer allow overproof drinks on their planes. Check with your airline. Apparently the stuff is flammable. I guess that means that 40% alcohol is not flammable. I know that many people will put food coloring in the Puncheon and pour it in a different bottle to "disguise" it. A certain type of red plum is often used to color it. Of course I'm not telling anyone to do this as a means of sneaking it on an airplane, a-hem.

1919! A Fantastic Gift
Without a doubt, 1919, at about $21 US in a beautiful decanter and packed in a sturdy box makes a wonderful gift. Smooth and sweet. We bring back 6 bottles each and every trip. You have to purchase at duty free (Piarco) and then they deliver it to the gate. No Puncheon allowed as it could be used as a terrorist cocktail!
