Hi Chris

Welcome to the myTobago forum.

There is a section on fishing in the out & about section at the top of the page, but here's the link http://www.mytobago.info/fishing.php

There are also lots of posts on the subject of fishing in the Sightseeing, Tours, Sports and Activities section of the forum. You might find the answer to your questions in there.

Cheers

Thanks Steve I will have a good look when I have more time in the week. I s it worth hiring a car for the 2 weeks while I am there to travel around? Can anyone recomend any charters that are good value as I hate getting ripped off with captains who do not care! regards Chris

Hi Chris

I posted a reply earlier, but it seems to have disapeared???

I would hire a car if I were you, at least for a few days. I guess it depends where you are staying (just noticed it's the Hilton) and what you like to do, but a car will allow you to explore with relative freedom and it's dead easy to navigate the island.

When you arrive at Crown Point (airport) grab a couple of FREE maps as you wait to get through imigration. These are invaluable for all sorts of info.

There is a regular mini bus service from the Hilton to Pigeon Point and surrounding areas and taxis will be easy to come by and will take you virtually anywhere on the island. The Hilton is a bl**dy long walk from Scarborough though!

To be honest it's rather 'isolated'.... insular is probably a better description, but if you like golf, then you've made the right choice.

As you like fishing though, you are right on the Atlantic coast and as Steve Hull has mentioned in another thread, you have direct access to Petit Trout lagoon for fishing the mangroves for tarpon and snapper. There are some excellent aerial photos of the lagoon at -

For a charter - check out the recommendations in the fishing articles, but you won't go wrong with Kester Herbert for inshore or offshore fishing.

8) Thank you Steve, have you any recomendations for car hire companys? Are there any crocodiles or aligators in the mangroves or on the island, are there any other dangerous things to watch out for etc. My boys are very keen to know but the wife is not so keen!

Hi Chris,

No crocs or aligators in the mangroves! And not many mangroves either!

You do have to watch out for the machineal trees by the side of some beaches. They have really nasty sap which causes rashes and skin irritation - so don't sit or stand under one! (They usually have a warning notice on them somewhere)

Other than that - the only things likely to cause irritation/annoyance are mozzies and sandflies. Both avoidable - mozzies with insect repellent and sandflies by avoiding beaches especially the dry sand towards the end of the afternoon/early evening.

As regards car hire companies - check out the appropriate part of this website. We used Sheppy's last time in Tobago - and got a good price and excellent service (but that's just our personal opinion).

Have a great time

Thank you very much Jane. What weather can we expect in April?Avoiding the sand may present a problem as will be fishing most of the time. Regards Chris

Hi Chris,

We were in Tobago last April and had more or less wall to wall sunshine with just the occasional very heavy shower (liquid sunshine as the locals describe it!) Temperatures were about 28-32C.

The beaches and sand are really not a problem - just watch out for sandflies in the late afternoon when they are at their worst. Other than that you really shouldn't have any problems.

If you fancy some boat trips let me know. As well as fishing with Kester, I have also recently done some trips with fishermen based at Castara. These guys have tried very hard to find (and succeeded!) in finding us fish. I am hoping to do one or two trips with them while you are out (along with Paul Williams who has also contributed to posts). I can also set up something with Kester to go for some big tarpon if you like - while the fishing at Castara is more varied, I haven't seen as many big tarpon up that way as there are around Pigeon Point.

For the shore fishing, give me a call when you arrive and I can at least point out places on a map and probably join you for a few early morning sessions as well. If you are bringing your fly rod, Friendship Flats is certainly worth a try for bonefish during the day time.

Some excellent advice (as always) on mozzies and sand flies here
http://www.mytobago.info/insects.php

Whilst the article is correct in advising that the little sods are active at dusk, they are also very active at first light - when it can be very still and quiet - so be prepared for a dawn assault if on the beaches early in the day.

I have to say that I am little troubled by sandflies, but those who are can react badly to their bites. Prevention is far better than cure - and less tedious / painful.

They are tiny things (also called no-see-ums by the folks from the States) and must be all mouth and teeth. My advice would be to wear trousers, rather than shorts when fishing along sandy beaches early and late in the day. They rarely fly higher than thigh height, so arms, neck, ears and face are pretty safe from attack and mozzies are rarely if ever encountered on the coast.

As Jane has mentioned, they are not a problem on the wet sand, so fishing near the water's edge, as long as it's safe too do so, is also a good method of avoidance. The trip back to the car though, can end up as a race to minimise bites, if you haven't prepared with the above advice.

Cheers

Oh - weather-wise : It will be hot, with the possibility of brief heavy showers, which will occur mostly in the middle of the night. Rain cannot be ruled out during the day, so we always take a roll-up kagoul and a telescopic umberella, which can come in handy as a parasol, if the sun is too strong and there is no shade around.

Thank you Steve we will wrap up when fishing etc. Yesterday I met someone who has been to Tobago and they told me there is abeach where a river flows into it sounds like a good spot for snook do you know where it is? Also have you seen any small fish called pin fish? and if so where?

It's where Courland river flows onto Turtle Beach. We had a go for snook there the other week with livebait, but apart from one bite and a lot of mullet splashing on the surface, we didn't see much action. We can give it naother try when you are over!
