My Tobago review

Post by Andrew Melling »

I visited Tobago for the second time in late November and since our last holiday in 1998, whilst many things had changed, particularly new building, the essential atmosphere was much the same. I feel a little guilty not having posted earlier, having benefited hugely from this marvellous site. I shall comment in the individual areas of the forum but in brief, my overall comments follow.

Splitting out three weeks into two centres was, I feel, the best way to fully enjoy the island and its many attractions. We intially stayed at the Toucan Inn and moved up to Castara to the Beach House. Both places were enjoyable for different reasons. The Toucan was a very friendly intimate hotel and the staff were super, particularly Troy the manager for whom nothing was too much trouble. Very handy for the airport, all amenities are easily walkable.

We visited Pigeon Point are were shocked at the state of the place - full of rubble, broken fencing, a real run-down facility with non-too friendly security personnel. We are pleased to note that measures are in place to improve the area and restore the beach to a location where vistors are welcome.

The Beach House is no misnomer, what a fantastic location with a real 'away from it all' feel and all the facilities you would ever need. Castara is great. From the fishing co-op, wonderful beaches, friendly shop owners and cheerful locals, what a place to holiday.

We travelled all around the island and found little gems everwhere, just a pity that Bloody Bay is no longer the beach it was. It looked like a major shoreline reconstruction project was underway with the forming a new river bay at the far end of the beach. Shame, really, on our last holiday in Tobago, this was our private beach!

Overall, a fantastic three weeks, but doesn't it pass quickly? I'm sure you feel the same now, Steve, even if your visit was slightly longer. Once again, congratulations for a brilliant site.

ps.Forgot to mention, we had persistent rain for much of the time we were there - didn't really matter!!
