Just a few bits of info for anyone planning to travel around by bus:

The bus station in Scarborough has moved from Gardenside Street to a temporary place on Sangster Hill Road (not sure for how long).

If you plan on taking the bus it might be a good idea to keep a stash of tickets - we had a few problems on Independence Day buying tickets in Charlotteville as all the places were closed and the bus drivers do not accept cash.

The timetable for buses leaving Scarborough seems to be fairly accurate, and buses seem to leave on time. In Charlotteville the timetable seems to mean nothing! - the bus was over and hour and a half late.

a bit hard tio describe... do you know where the inland reveniew is?
on the waterfront, looking at the port you follow the road to the right, there is a big tank (something like that) almost oppsite is a street going in (to the right) next corner right again and that is where the busses start now...OR
just ask a person with a friendly face

much easier....

you mean, the busstation (the real one) is not finished yet? last year, we on the bus in a backyard type of place because the busstation was being rebuilt. the place where we got on last year was around the block from the market.

oh, they did build a galvanize fence to block out the views in the meanwhile...

same next door with the new library... check us again in 5 to 10 years...

in the airport the little newspaper shop should sell them. hopefully you are there when it is opne

they also sell phonecards and stuff...
have a smooth (bus)ride...

Hi Everybody,

Me and my husband are going on our honeymoon to Tobago in February.
We are staying in the Grafton Beach Hotel and I am wondering if you can use public transport there. We would like to go to Scarborough and other places but I am not sure we want to rent a car.

Hi Lina,yes there is a bus stop right outside the hotel.The service runs betweenScarborough bus station and Plymouth.The fare is about TT$3 single.You would have to walk to Black Rock to buy your tickets(5mins stroll),and then catch the bus from Black Rock.Alternatively take a taxi from Black Rock,NOT from the hotel.You will get a route(shared) taxi from there which will be two or three times the bus fare,but considerably cheaper than the hotel taxi.

Hi all,

well it does not look like the centrel bus station will get finished soon. But a trip to Tobago is not complete without a bus trip. In Castara you can buy tickets at the post office. From Castara to Scarborough the bus takes around 45 min (depends on the driver) and is an really adventure. I always wonder how the drivers know that nobody is coming along behind the next corner

Its a really basic thing to go on a bus an gives you a real good impression of the living style. As Julia said the time table in Scarborough is almost right but when you live on the landside you have to be lucky if a bus is in time.

Nevertheless, enjoy your time and bus tours on Tobago

You can catch the VERY early morning bus that goes to Roxbro',and then hope to met the bus to C'ville,But the return trip would have to be via Scarbro,!
If you are staying in Castara,you can rent a car for a day or even a car and driver/guide.

Hello Tony,

as David wrote, there is only the chance to go very early in the morning along Roxborough but normally you have to go to Scarborough first and from there to Charlotteville and the same way back what would take too much time.

Also - like David wrote - I would prefer to hire a car. The street from Castara to Charlotteville is very nice and leads you right through the rainforest. Or you ask for a taxi in the village.

If you go for diving maybe they can give you a lift.

Enjoy, whatever you decide to do.

Back in December 2005 my family and I drove to Castara from town, via Mason Hall. It was an amazing (and scary for my wife) drive. The views are amazing, you're on top of a mountain looking out at the blue Caribbean Sea.
Then we got to Castra and proceeded up the coast, my goal being Englishman's Bay... this was nice.
Being adventurous I decided to drive on up and in the end we got to Charlotteville via that coastal road which was at the time (Dec'05) not completed and unpaved.
It was scary, the road was a combination of gravel and mud and at the time we were driving the rain was threatening to fall, and I knew if that happened we would be stuck. High praises to the rented Corolla that I drove, as it handled the conditions pretty well considering it's not a 4x4.
Does anyone know if they have done further work on that road?

Hi Chris

Yes, that road is now as good as finished. I believe they're still tidying up in one or two spots but basically its totally drivable. After visiting Tobago for 50 years next year, I'm looking forward to taking that road for the first time on my next visit next February/March.

Hi.
Thanks for the update.
It's now up to me to convince my family to take that drive again come Dec'06. I think it was one of the best Saturday's I have ever spent since I've been back in T&T and we did see "all" of Tobago.
We started off from Crown Point, went to Town, over Mason Hall (I was on the lookout for the waterfall which I must have missed completely), Castra, Englishman's Bay, Charlotteville and then from there to Roxborough and back down to Town and finally back to Crown Point.

And I just remembered I might have some projects upcoming on Tobago.. which would make it neccessary for me to spend a few weekends there between now and end of December... oh the shame.
