Trinidad - HELP!!!

Post by Tricia T. »

I'm scheduled for POS tomorrow and have been planning on Castara for the weekend, but was just advised that Tobago Express is sold out for the weekend and I'd have to go stand-by. I'd hate to cancel our entire getaway - I am SO looking forward to it! :(
Does anyone know possibly a charter flight or private owner who'd be willing to help 5 ladies for a similar price? (worth a shot, right? :))
Or, does anyone have any idea what we could do if we end up in Trinidad all weekend? Is there anyplace as nice as Castara that we could find? Any rainforests, etc? I have done absolutely no research of the larger island, so am just starting now.
What to do? What to do? :(

Hello Tricia

What a dilemma! I totally sympathise.

There's no way you will get a private charter for ANYTHING like the cost of the airbridge flights (which, apart from anything, are subsidesed by the T&T Government). Also, five pax means you're talking of more than your average light aircraft - and given the time you have left before leaving, frankly I just don't think anything is possible.

Trinidad is not a tourist destination. It has wonderful beaches and rainforest areas, but is not somewhere to visit without thorough preparation and ideally only as an arranged package. My advice would be to take the stand-by and keep your fingers crossed.

nevermind. sorry, everyone.

Port Authority's schedule says the boat leaves Tobago at 11:00, not Trinidad.
back to the drawing board!

Tricia,

I don't want to get your hopes up, but both times I flew from Trinidad to Tobago, I didn't have connectors and had to hope for a stand by. Flights were full when I got there both times. Within two hours each time, I was basking on the beach in Castara Bay. I will talk to the goddesses for you and hope for the best. You'll have the time of your life,

Hi!

Sorry to hear about your problems. If you are stuck in Trinidad you might want to visit the Asa Wright Centre. It's fantastic for birds and they do a rainforest trail tour twice a day. You should see plenty of other wildlife as well including big matte lizards and agoutis. You can watch the birds from a balcony and you get great views of hummingbirds up close! You can book lunch. The website is http://www.asawright.org.

We also visited Matura Bay at night to see the leatherback turtles laying their eggs [email protected].

Maracas beach is the main beach up north. Las Cuevas is good too if you don't mind the black vultures! Grande Riviere is gorgeous, but a bit of a trek.

You could take a boat trip at Caroni swamp and see the scarlet ibis return to roost. You should see snakes and caymen.

Waterloo temple and Hanuman Murti were interesting religious sites.

There is also Pointe a Pierre Wildfowl Trust for a nice walk and more birds and wildlife.

Down south, there is the Pitch lake - the largest in the world.

I hope this helps. Fingers crossed you get your flight.
