Rotis and good food near Beaches

Post by Nav Singh »

Hi there,

My wife and i will be going to Tobago in the summer. Being Indian we would love to sample their Rotis. Does anyone have any suggestion on where we can find stalls/restraunts selling such things.

Also although we will be staying at the Hilton, we are looking to spend moer time at the more caribean style beaches. clear still waters etc.

Can anyone recommend some good beaches (not too busy hopefully) and nice places to eat that are in walking distance from those beaches.

Thanks In advance

Hi Nav

Welcome aboard!

Based upon what you say, Store Bay is going to be your best bet. None of the other beaches have much choice in the way of refreshments/meals, etc.

There are a number of food stalls at Store Bay serving 'local' food - see our Restaurant listing (Food & Drink menu) for more details of the individual stalls.

Our favourite rotis are at Lal's in Scarborough. We like the veggy ones the best. You will need a car to get there from the Hilton.

hello nav
can i recommend surfers bar at mount irvine the beach is great for snorkelling and the bar does great rotis and cold beers
its well used by locals at weekends when the atmosphere is buzzing
the beach further along called 'wall' is usually quieter but doesn't have any facilities although you can walk to surfers from there-the mount irvine hotel also has a beach bar but i'm not sure if it's reopened yet after it's refurb.
we'll be there in 18 days :D :D :D
cant wait for a carib and a goat roti
enjoy

Hi Nav,

another nice Roti shop right on the beach is in Castara on the big bay (Caribbean side in the north-east).
Vera's Roti Shop. I really love her roti, whether chicken, beef or veggi.

She startet with a little shop on the street but now have a little restaurant right on the beach (20 m).

Enjoy and say hello from me, if you go there
Cheers

Hi All,

Wow, guys im honoured, i really didnt expect much of a response and certainly not such quick ones!

Steve, i see your face on a lot of posts :D so i am thinking perhaps this is your site or you are a mod, and i have to say i have spent weeks on this site, its great. I have contacted at least 3 places i can recall that are directly because of this site and two at least i think will be firm reservations, the helicopter chappie hasnt got back to me but then again i only emailed him on the day i posted this.

Manfred & Gisella i really appreciate your posts as my wife is a veggie and i want her to enjoy where we go as much as i do. Thanks!

Mary, i am not forgetting you.....Roti & Beer...mmmm....paradise.... a lady after my own heart.....

Thank you all so much as its my first time to Tobago and also my first honeymoon  so naturally would like to make it as perfect as possible rather than spending most the time lost.

My grandmother tells me that many Sikhs were exiled from India years ago to the caribean area, so it will be interesting to see the influence we have had in this part of the world.

peace happiness & great holidays to you all.

P.S my apologies if i cant reply to everyone after this post, but i will check in to see your advice and it will be appreciated greatly i assure you.

hey nav
seems like you still have a lot of reading to do on the page outside the forum section

yes, steve is the daddy of this amazing page and he allows us all to play in his "front yard" every day!

check the restaurant listings, there are so many great places, it would take ages to name them all... be prepared that in summer not every listed restaurant is open, since it is low season and some owners simply go on holidays, but don't worry, there will be enough places to enjoy yummy food.

staying at the hilton, check with the girls from the front desk (Ingrid, Airuth and the gang) they are all great and local and can give you tips, too. They might even know a driver to bring you to some nice and real local places!!!

enjoy

We had the most amazing roti from a place called Four Roads. It is by the Penny Savers in Canaan. I think it's by the church. I never actually went but my hubby went (almost every day!) to pick it up for us. They are so huge that we could share one! They make the skins fresh on the spot. YUMMMMM!

Bon Apetit!
