Library and bookshop in Scarborough?

Post by Pat A Cavanagh »

Is the Lowlands Mall the one in Scarborough? If so, the last time I was there in Jan 2004, it was being redeveloped and the library had temporarily (although apparently for years rather than months) been moved to a school on nearby hill. Is this still the situation? Also is there now somewhere with a reasonable selection of maps and guidebooks or is it better to buy them beforehand? When I first went to Tobago (about 20 years ago) I ordered some Ordnance Survey maps from Trinidad (the only place that seemed to stock them) and they eventually arrived about 3 months after our holiday. I still have them but they don't have many roads on them and they don't cover the whole island; there were several sheets needed to do that and they were not all in stock

Hello Pat

Welcome aboard!

The Lowlands Mall is in Lowlands - opposite the Tobago Hilton - a little over halfway between Crown Point and Scarborough.

Can't comment on the location of the library, I'm afraid, but I'm sure somebody else will jump in there.

Yes, buy your maps beforehand. The large-scale ones you talk about are a 1960's map that came in a 3-sheet set. Sheet 1, covering the Scarborough - Crown Point area is out of print and the only one missing from my own set. I ordered the full set on the Net from an American firm, Omni Resources. They sent the two sheets for the north of the island despite the first sheet not being available. All my requests for a refund have failed. A real cowboy firm. Take my advise and stick to buying here in the UK - at least you can do something about it over here.

As a matter of interest, Tobago doesn't have many road - so you won't notice a huge difference on the newer maps.
