Pirates Bay

Have been to Tobago twice in the last three years and we are going again in september and taking some family with us. I can't recall going to Pirate's Bay but it sounds fabulous. Can someone tell me where it is and the best way to get there. We only have a hire car (not a 4x4).

Hello Maggie

You have two choices - to walk there, or go by boat. DO NOT attempt to drive there.

Walking takes about 20 minutes from the village centre. Simply walk along the beach/sea front, pasing the pier and then Cholson Chalets and Gails Restaurant. The tiny road then takes a 90° right bend, whilst an unmade track continues straight on, following the coast line. This is the track to Pirates Bay. Simply walk this track up the hill. There are fabulous views of the bay and surrounding mountains. You will eventually come to some steps, on the left side, leading down into Pirates Bay. A lovely walk, but don't forget to take a sun hat and lots of water.

For the less energetic, the quickest/easiest way is to catch a boat out to the bay. It costs next to nothing. Simply ask any of the fisherman that always hang around the fishing co-operative area half-way along the beach front.

Anything else I have been missing out on in Tobago? Have done the diving, snorkelling, horseriding, boat trips, sunday school, island tours, lots of eating and drinking and enjoying the sunshine! Am taking family with us this year so hope they appreciate and love the same things about Tobago that we do.

Went to Pirates Bay a couple of weeks ago. There is a guy called Son Son who has the glass bottom boat. He charged me and my husband 40TT return each and let us have as long as we wanted on the beach. He will take just a single person over there for the same fare...very good value I thought. Just tell him a time and he will come back to fetch you. He rents out chairs, snorkelling gear when you get to the bay.

Hi Steve,

If you just go to the jetty where the fishing boats are, Son Son's glass bottom boat is moored there, you cant miss it( It has his logo painted on the side) Ask any of the locals, we did as he wasnt around at the time and they will phone him on his mobile, and he came to us within 10 minutes and fetched the boat to us from its mooring. If he has gone out to Pirates Bay he will come back and take you out there. He is a really nice guy, very helpful. He also does barbecues and boat trips.

It would be really great if someone could find out Son-Son's mobile telephone number. When we go in Feb., we would love to hire him to take us to Cotton Bay (the 1st. bay to the South of C'ville), which I hear has some of the best snorkelling on the whole island!

So anyone who's going in the coming months, try to get his phone number & post it on this web. Steve, you might even add the information to your body of info.

Cotton Bay is (I think) adjacent to Lovers Bay.

You can park a boat on Cotton Bay and swim to Lovers Bay ... it is Lovers Bay where the beauty can be found ... and if you can spend some time on the very small beach (?) ... and stay there for a while ... then all of life's troubles will disappear and you will find that sense of wisdom and knowingness (that comes and goes) will be there for you ... before it it forgotten once again ...

... I am going back there one day, even if I have to swim from Castara !

Getting a boat straight to Lovers bay would be difficult because the corals are so close to the sea surface ... you can take the Kayaks with Clarke if you want to park on Lover's Bay.

The beauty extends out to Booby Island ... there is some serious swimming and plenty of Barracuda in that area.

Clak unfortunately sold the kayak business and the new guy is not establshed yet, but I hear from october on he might. keep our fingers crossed for that.

Shame to hear that Clarke has gone ... I remember he was a little frustrated with the work permit costs so I think it was on the cards ... he was a really nice chap.

I think he is getting married and starts some business in spain. so no reason to cry as long as we will get another nice guy as kayaking instructor. clark said he is cool, so we don't worry much

have a nice swim from castara next time paul, know that everybody knows waht you are doing on that beach noone might drop you by boat

Hmmm ...

... my presence in Lovers Bay is insignificant ... yet the fact that I have been there is of significance to myself ... I will, accordingly, be pleased to swim there, battle the currents, endure all the elements, risk being scoffed by a gang of hungry Barracuda ... all the way from Castara, just to spend a few moments in such a heavenly and inspirational place ... and then I will swim back to Castara for dinner at 1900 hours prompt !!

Maybe an easier option could be to walk there and abseil down the huge cliff ... but that would upset all the boobies ... what do you think?

As for Clarke ... he told me he was engaged and his fiance was studying in England ... Clarke mentioned that he was keen to try out his Kayaking business in Isle de Grande just off the coast of Brazil.

I wonder ... he seemed too much of a cool dude to be happy in Spain.

Such a nice chap ... maybe he can let us all know and keep in touch.

Personally, I don't care what you were doing in Lovers Bay, Paul, as long as you remembered to take those dreaded underpants home when you were finished.

I believe that Clark went to Mallorca. Like you say, it just doesn't seem like his scene. Anyway, I'm sure we all wish him the best of luck there.

The new guy, Michael Hagopian, expects to open at the end of September. I've had a couple of positive reports from people who have met him. Reckoned to be a nice guy, but more serious and business-minded than Clark. Let wish him, too, all the best luck.

I'v never been to Pirates Bay but the more I hear about it the more I feel to go there in October when I come back.
Hopefully it is clean from Paul's underpants....

As far as I am aware, the underpants were posted on eBay for sale ... Giselle allegedly purchased them possibly in a vain effort to close the matter (or could there have been another reason

??).

Sorry Joanne, I can't say anything about kayaking but I have to make clear that I never ever had the idea or even did think about buying these ..... underpants (I have no right word for it but definitely not FAMOUS)

I DON'T KNOW WHERE THEY ARE! and I don't want to know
