pigeon point beach
We are going to tobago for the first time this Jan, can harly wait. I have scoured this website and have a whole load of things planned but I am sure I read somewhere that you could snorkel from Pigeon Point, is this true. We will definitely be visiting more undeveloped beaches but I have to say Pigeon Point does look very nice, in terms of classic white sand and crystal clear sea. The thing is there are so many other places I want to visit (castara, englishmans bay etc) if it is not as nice as its photos then I wont bother!

Hi Jornason
Pigeon Point is a truly beautiful beach, once you get past all the scrappy development half-way along. It is well worth a visit, but there's no decent snorkelling accessible directly from the beach there. Avoid it like the plague if there's a cruise ship docked at Scarborough - the place starts to look like a lobster farm.

Steve, thanks for your prompt reply, we will most definitely try it. While I'm on here another of our must do's is the kayaking trip at charlotteville, any news whether the chap has sold his business or not and if he has that it is as well run. It sounded an amazing trip from your review I do hope it's still running.

Sad to say, I've heard nothing. Clark Weissinger has left the island but I haven't heard whether the guy he sold the business to has started. I have, however, just written to a contact in C'Ville to see what the latest position is and will hopefully be able to let you know early next week.

Hi Joranson
Pigeon Point beach is possibly one of the worst places to snorkel on the Caribbean side of Tobago.
a)The water is too shallow and featureless to attract anything other than small fish (grunts and tiny snapper) - you may see a passing shoal of mullet though.
b)there are usually lots of people there stirring up the bottom, so visiblity is often restricted and
c)the boat traffic is like nowhere else, with hi-speed pirogues cutting across the point, making the place an accident waiting to happen.
Mt Irvin, Arnos Vale, Castara and Englishman's Bay are firm favourites with most people for the sheer variety of species and regular excellent water clarity.
Cheers

Take only photos - leave only footprints. I like that concept.

Hi, I have to agree with Steve regarding snorkeling from Pigeon point beach, having just returned I saw a few fish mainly around the jetty.
However, Pigeon point is the ideal place to pick up a glass bottom boat for a snorkeling trip.
We went out several times with Renaldo on Power 2 (can be booked at Pigeon Point, just see Renaldo wandering around the beacj or Hazel, seated at the start of the jetty). We were impressed with Renaldo's knowledge of the reef and it's fishy inhabitants, also by the fact that he anchored off of the reef to avoid damage to coral, only took us to deeper areas where we were unlikely to touch the coral (and instructed us not to touch). He also always has a surf board trailing behind the boat on a long rope and insists on life jackets for novices. The currents can be quite strong out there, but you can just hold the rope and enjoy watching the fish if you are not a very strong swimmer (or lazy like me

Hi Erik
It is only a 25 minute drive from Crown Point to the Arnos Vale Hotel so something you could easily do by taxi, if you aren't renting a car yourself. There's certainly no need to stay there - although having said that, a stay in the area could be a BIG change from Crown Point.
