Birdies Nest

Hi Nick (and Michelle who raised this subject later)

By good fortune, we are currently staying in a villa not five minutes drive from Courland Bay and Birdie’s Nest. In view of your post, I decided to ring the owners and pop over for a look.

Birdie’s Nest is a typical Caribbean property. It is situated in a small rural village – the sort of location that would frankly send shivers up your spine and have you constantly looking over your shoulder in some/most islands. I purposely feigned difficulty in finding the address (at least that’s my story) and stopped and asked for directions of three different people. I was met by nothing but friendly smiles and helpful instruction. One lad even started to run down the road ahead of me to show me the way. To experience TRUE Tobago, I suspect that you will be hard pressed to find a nicer base than Birdie’s Nest.

The property is virtually on the beach – you certainly couldn’t be closer without getting wet. It looked like an excellent beach from which to swim. The main apartment is on the first floor and comprises a large living area and kitchen at the front, with two bedrooms at the rear. They are spacious but as you would expect at the price, only basically furnished. At the price, it represents excellent value for money. Obviously the property is not air-conditioned and at the moment neither does it have ceiling fans – but I understand that these are planned. You could find it a trifle warm at night.

At the present moment, Birdie’s Nest is being renovated. The ground floor of the property is being converted into two one-bedroom apartments. There is a possibility that the main apartment on the upper floor may be converted so that it can be let in its current form, or as two one-bedroom apartments. The refurbishment is expected to be finished by the end of April, but having visited whilst the work was going on, I can vouch that the work is not disruptive to visitors.

Birdie’s Nest is currently occupied by a party of three visitors. I must extend my thanks to them for allowing me to interrupt their peace and quiet and view the apartment. They expressed total delight with the property, were familiar with myTobago.info and promised to post a review after returning to the States.

The property is a 5-10 minute walk from the main road and local village shops. A self-drive car would be fairly important – but I always recommend a car regardless of where you stay.

Birdie’s Nest will provide a total Caribbean ‘get away’ experience and allow you to really connect with the local population. I think I can guarantee that you will find that a heart-warming experience, as long as you “go with the flow”. The only downside was the lack of fans, but I understand that this is to be addressed. The type of location also means that light sleepers may find themselves woken before dawn to the usual village chorus of cockerels and possibly cocrico (more commonly known as the Chachalaca, this turkey-like bird is Tobago’s national bird and derives the local name ‘cocrico’ from the loud and raucous call it uses to keep in contact).

One final word. Birdie’s Nest is owned by the charmingly named locals Princess Robinson and her son Prince. The ‘business’ end of the partnership is Prince – who was just 18 last week. I was superbly impressed by this charming and enterprising young man and truly wish him every success.

The Birdie’s Nest website appears to offer an honest appraisal of the property. I took a couple of photographs of the property and beach view and will gladly email copies to anyone interested in the property. Simply email me at [email protected].

Thank you very much for your review, we are finding your website invaluable. I must admit your discription of Black Rock is exactly spot on, We stayed at the Rex Christmas/New Year 2002/3 and found the people of black rock and Plymouth absolutley charming!! However I was a little suprised to find they are converting Birdies Nest into apartments as the website gives the impression of a house to yourself. I shall contact Prince and get the low down. Thanks again.

Hi Michelle

Thanks - how about returning the favour with a brief review of your impressions of the Rex Turtle Beach as you stayed there relatively recently. As you will have noticed, there are lots of questions about the Rex but nobody seems to want to share their experiences. Yes, I was a trifle dissapointed at Prince's plans for Birdie's Nest, but given the layout of it, I don't think having two one-bedroom apartments downstairs is going to be very noticeable or intrusive. As you say, contact him and get the low-down.

Steve, I would love to see your pictures of Birdie's Nest (I also just e-mailed you the request). We are planning a trip to Tobago in July 03 and I am strongly considering this little slice of heaven. My husband's only concern is that only the appt on the bottom floor is available, and he is wondering what the noise level from the appartment above may be. I also wonder how big the appartment would be downstairs?

By the way, great job on the mytobago site. Truely informative and extensive. I am originally from Trinidad, now living in Canada, and this will be our first family trip back to T&T. My husband and 7 yr old daughter are looking forward to this so much. (The baby will just have to see pictures of it when she's older!)

Hi Bernie

The downstairs apartment was still under construction when I was there, so it was hard to imagine what it would be like. However, it seemed a solid brick-built house and to be frank, I would be most surprised if you could hear any noise from the upstairs guests. To be frank, I would imagine the sea is more likely to be the noise problem – after all, the sort of visitor that goes to these places is not the type to have a radio blaring all the time.

I can’t quote sizes, but the building is of reasonably substantial size (by Caribbean/European standards).

Here’s one photo that I’ve already published in the forum in reply to someone else’s questions. I’ve got about two others that I’ll email to you.

Have a great time and let us know how you get on. Also, please send my regards to Prince and his mother, Princess, when and if you get to Birdie’s.

We can definitely handle the "noise" from the sea. My favourite memory is falling asleep to the sound of the Caribbean sea Down-the-Islands in Trinidad and at Crown Point Cabanas when we used to live down there. I appreciate your very prompt response Steve. I am thinking we will definitely be staying there now, especially since you sent me the pictures of inside (though it was of the top floor), but it is a great indication of the pride taken in the "nest". I'll definitely have lots of pictures taken to share with you when I return.

Regards, Bernie

I received an e-mail from Prince, and thought I'd add it here too. He does sound like a very nice gentleman, as you said Steve.

Regarding the downstairs apartment:
"The price would just be 50.00,Us for all of you and I could arrange to put two beds either in the room where you are staying or in the living room for your children or all of you can stay in the same room since its just 4 nights. The appartment is long and consists of a large master bed room a living room open to kitchen and a porch. I don't have pitures of it as yet and would be putting on some soon. I would like to know if you would take it so I could arrange for you to stay. I am sorry for any inconvienency and pick at the airport is no problem.

Hi Bernie

As I mentioned, Prince had just turned 18 years of age when I visited back at the start of February. I was immensely impressed by his enthusiasm and desire to do well. I could hardly get away. That’s one of the reasons I have so few photographs – he was asking me so many questions regarding promotion and management of his property that I couldn’t concentrate on the property. Prince had never even heard of myTobago.info, so I am convinced he wasn’t simply trying to ‘butter me up’ - it was a true case of a young local lady, with only a very basic education, but a real desire to do something with his life. People like Prince are the reason I feel so strongly for Tobago. I really, really hope he does well. I just wish I could have met his mother, if only to tell her how impressed I was with Prince.

At prices like that it’s a total steal- he’s robbing himself, to be honest, and I hope you will show your appreciation if everything comes up to par.
Have a great trip and let us know how you get on.
