dress code on the beach

Post by Maja M »

Ok guys, here comes an akward question.

I read on this site that topless-sunbathing is forbidden. What I was wondering though is if a (not-so-extreme) g-string bikini would be considered too much or if that as well is forbidden?

Has anyone ever come across someone in that sort of bikini on Tobago? Maybe some locations on the island are more liberal to that type of swim-wear. I'm staying in Castara btw and asking this because obviously I don't want to offend anyone.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Maja

I don't imagine there is a specific law forbidding g-strings, but there are the usual "public decency" laws. Having said that, I doubt whether a Tobago policeman has ever been near any Castara beach.

These sort of decisions are always difficult. It is probably safe to say that the older generations would be totally shocked by such attire, but no doubt it will be likes bees to the honey as far as the young fishermen are concerned.

 Maja i feel you have very little to worry about from the police. You will be surrounded by far too many men on the beach for the police to see you. However these same men may also block out your sun. You will however have lots of marriage proposals....

Hahaha well if I ever meet someone who desperately needs to marry a Tobagonian I'll be sure to remember to tell her to wear a thong

Anyways, thanks for your replies. As for being stared at I don't care, as long as I don't cause any trouble. I am travelling to Tobago with my boyfriend so that should at least keep some fishermen off. I am not planning for any long walks down the beach. Attracting attention is not my main purpose, tanning is.

Cheers and thanks again! :)

Hi Maja--

We stayed in Castara 2 yrs. ago & there was a lovely German young lady who wore a string bikini. Besides getting admiring glances ( my husband was certainly one!) she encountered no problems. So enjoy yourself & get a good tan!!

Aw can't a fellow say anything without getting misunderstood? :(
I meant that that end of the beach is usually fairly secluded as people tend to gather near Naturalist or Cascreole.

How could anybody have been so crass as to think that it had anything to do with being immediately below your apartment balcony?

how could that happen david. I should have known that you only had majas backs...BEST in mind...
no offense...

maja: don't worry about your swimsuit and just bring a beachwrap to go into the boathouse restaurant and hide there with a carib or cup of coffee if too many men are gathering  I might be there to have a game of back gammon with you, do you play?

Hahaha. Guys thanks so much for all your replies. Weird, perverted and honest, well they all made me laugh anyways.

Stephanie: I've never played backgammon in my life, but I wouldn't mind playing if you taught me :) I'll be sure to bring a pair of shorts and a t-shirt when I leave the beach, no worries. Might there be any beachwraps in Castara village for me to buy? That'd be nice, maybe with some Carib prints on them 8)

Btw, when stopping at Penny Savers? Do they sell sun-lotion? I just don't feel like dragging it all the way from home.

Cheers everyone!!

Hi Maja

I think that you will have fun during your vacation!

Penny Savers do sell sunlotions, so the only thing you maybe should bring down is a sunstick (15-30) for your lips and/or nose.

About sunlotion, remember it´s tropical sun in Tobago, much stronger compared with Spain or Greece, even with some cloud. I´ve seen many first timers who are using far too low sun protection factor.

Ronald, you are absolutely right. I already have a load of sunblock with me which I bought from Boston last fall. I'm starting from 50 and turn into 30 later, learned that in Brazil a couple years ago. Please don't think me being weird buying lotion from US. The reason is that I'm allergic to most ones except this one  .

on the big beach of castara at bobo shanti's shack they have a chice of beach raps. unfortunately I haven't seen any with carib print...

also in englishman's bay they usually have a choice... so noone has to go "unrapped"

for the sunblocker I guess it is a good idea to buy it here... my friends always have to pay overweight because the bottles are so heavy in the suitcase... you do need a choice to make your way down from a really high one to the lower ones. we always keep the leftover of our guests for the ones after, so they can use it if they did not bring the "full range"...

maya: would be delighted to teach you, or we just play checkers instead... the sun and the brain sometimes give trouble together...

enjoy the taning and liming everybody

I was thinking that as David is in situ at the moment maybe he could help Maja by wearing a thong himself on big bay as I am sure this would help to soften the blow and the local guys used to what the future may bring.

Good idea, Paul

Giving new meaning to the term "builder's bum", this photograph leads one to wonder whether this adapted thong could be of use to David in his role as a professional chef.

Hopefully he has brought one to Tobago and will be able to join Maja.
