Diabetic Travellers - available products?

Post by David Cooke »

Does anyone know - is the Englich product "Lucozade" (a fizzy glucose drink) available in shops in Tobago? It's an essential for diabetics, and is difficult to transport with the present air travel security restrictions.

Hello David,
Lucozade is extremely popular in T&T. You get it almost everywhere wher they sell drinks, even in rum shops and bars. Hope this helps.

Hi David,

As Patrick says, it's freely available all over the island. Morshead - one of the shops on the island with a wide range of imported produce - also stocks quite a selection of jams, sugar substitutes and the like, suitable for diabetics. My father-in-law has Type II, and gets along just fine! In fact, he's probably better catered for here than he was in the UK! Watch yourself with some of the local food though - as tasty as it is, it's quite often full of hidden sugars - which is probably why it tastes so good!!

Enjoy yourself - I'm sure you will!

Lisa.

Not sure if the correct cooking terminology is 'stew' but yes, sugar can and is often used especially in the 'stew' chicken/beef, where the meat is cooked in caramalised sugar, and if you are lucky, perhaps even been marinated and cooked in rum too!
