WILL YOU HELP SAVE TOBAGO'S TURTLES?

Post by Anna M »

This is an appeal to anyone visiting Tobago within the next 5 months, who would like to get involved with helping to save endangered leatherback turtles.
There is poaching of these turtles taking place on certain beaches in Tobago.Nesting turtles are being taken from the beach and butchered, sometimes before they have had time to nest, and so wiping out not just one turtle but future generations too. This is of enormous consequence to an already critically endangered population and action needs to be taken now.
Would you be interested in patrolling the beaches in the evenings to look out for nesting turtles?
An increased presence of people on the nesting beaches would act as a deterent to poachers. They would be less likely to take a turtle with witnesses present.
The beaches which need patrolling are Turtle beach and Grafton.
If you would like to get involved please email or phone for more details.
Thank you.

P.S. I promise you this will be more worthwhile and satisfying than sitting in a bar all evening! :D

Can't help - but think the notion of poaching is completely abhorant.

Maybe a fund could be started to pay for "rangers"?

Trying not to sound patronising or to think slinging money at the problem is the only solution but a collection at the airport would surely help?

Just musing like...
