Cash/Credit or Travellers Cheques

Post by Mel Tierney »

Hi, I wonder if you can help. I'm flying to Tobago on Saturday (can't wait!!, i'm sooooo excited now) and i'm staying with a friend and I'm really not sure in what form I should take my money. As I'm staying with a friend there will be no SAFE that I can make use of to store my valuables so I don't want to have too much cash with me but at the same time I don't want to find I haven't got a facility to withdraw my money

So my question is really what in your opinion is the best way for me to take my money. I don't know whether to take enough TT dollars to get me through a couple of days and then just use my debit card (Maestro) - are there plenty of cash machines available or will I have to travel a distance to find one? Also if I use my maestro card will I be charged everytime you draw money out???

Or am I best taking travellers cheques - again, as I'm not staying in a hotel is it to cash these, are there plenty of places I can do this and are there only certain times/days where the facility to cash them will be available??

Any advice woudl be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mel,I generally take TT$1000 for initial expenses and use credit card/s for purchasesand Nationwide Visa for cash withdrawals from ATM.
As for whether you pay dor a transaction you should ask your bank about that.

Mel, from this recent thread http://www.mytobago.info/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4427 your Maestro bank card should work in Tobago.

Traveller's cheques are of course safest in case of loss and these are best changed in a bank, but be warned that the lines in the banks can be long. Your best bet would be to have some starter cash and then use credit cards, or debit cards for cash withdrawals.

For a list of ATMs in Tobago, check here http://www.mytobago.info/cashmachines.php but without knowing where you will be staying, its impossible to say how far away the nearest ATM would be. The ATMs are mostly located in Scarborough or the Crown Point area.
