Game Fishing in July

Post by Geoff Seabrook »

We are coming back to Tobago in July after a couple of years away. We let my 18 year pld son choose the holiday destination and there was no question it would be Tobago. One thing he wants to do is game fishing or deep sea fishing. I read that the season ends in June. Is there any good game fishing in July and does anyone have a recommendation of the best boat and skipper?

Hi Geoff

I wouldn't say that the season ends in July - there are always fish to be caught around Tobago - but Marlin will be scarce as they may have moved on during their migrations. Feb to May is probably best for 'big game' from the offshore boats and that's when the two main fishing tournaments are held out of Charlotteveille and Pigeon Point.

There are other species to try for and they will test your tackle and stamina, like mahi-mahi, tuna and wahoo.

Inshore, tarpon, jacks and barracuda can give more consistent sport on lighter gear.

I've trawled through some of the previous posts on offshore fishing and here are some that could be of interest. Some include contact details of charters and if I had to pick one, it would be Grand Slam out of Pigeon Point, but there are other charters out of Scarborough, Castara and Charlotteville, so most of the island is covered.
