"Backpacker" trip to Tobago?

Post by Martin H »

Hi Everyone,

I have never been to the Carribian before but now by chance a perfect oportunity has appeared for me.
Im a Swedish citizen and furtunate to have been sent to USA to work a couple weeks this summer, and when the work is done there I have 2 weeks to spare before Im needed at another company plant in Brazil. So, what to do with those 2 spare weeks in the end of July?... Tobago ofcourse.

Now Ive got tickets from Atlanta to Port of Spain and tickets for the trip to Brazil 2 weeks later. What do you guys recon, do I need to preorder tickets for my short flight over to Tobago? or is it fine to buy those on location?

Another thing I havent sorted is the accommodation, is it feasable to jump in a Taxi, ask the driver to get me to a place in, say Castara... or Charlotteville, or some other nice place, to find somewhere to stay. Or should I try to book a room in forehand? After all, its the so called "low season", but maybe that doesnt mean to much on Tobago.

Im hoping to get some nice quiet vacation, strolls on the beach, some walkabouts, nice weather and maybe a few good scubadiving days too.

Thanks
Martin

Hi Martin

Welcome aboard!

Yes, you should have no real problem getting flights over to Tobago or accommodation anywhere in Tobago at this time of year.

Have a great trip.

Thanks Steve, and thanks for the quick reply :)

I have another pleasant problem, I have no idea what part of the island I should aim for :) Northeast for the great diving? Scarborough? Ive heard much good been said about Castara. I have tried to read as much about Tobago on the net as possible, but mostly everyone have nothing but positive superlatives to say about allmost any corner of the Island... luxury problems of today

Hi Martin

Forget Scarborough - its only worth a couple of hours. My advice would be to look at the Caribbean coast, including Castara and Charlotteville.

Hi Martin, as you see I´m also Swedish, so if you want you can write me directly.

First, if I understand you right you have a ticket from Trinidad to Brazil, that´s good as the custom would not let you in if you don´t have a return ticket or an on-going ticket.
If you arrive late to Piarco Airport you might get problem to get a ticket across to Tobago, but that something YesTourism in Tobago might be able to help you with via e-mails before you arrive.
If you arrive late, without connection to Tobago same day/evening, stay nearby Piarco at some guesthouse so you are able to be early to the airport again.

Second, you need an address when entering the custom at Piarco, an address in Trinidad or in Tobago, you will not be allowed to pass without an address!

I was also a back-packer when I first start visit W.I. 1987, and I use to do like this. I did choose a cheap place nearby the airport and than start look for a better place next day.
The custom only need the first address from you. You can to the same both in Trinidad and Tobago if you don´t choose a place before you go. July is low season, you will not have any problem to find rooms.

I´m going July 11 and will be in Tobago for 6 weeks, but I stay by local friends in Bon Accord, Crown Point area.

Martin,Iwould suggest that you book some accommodation in Castara and then make arrangements with them to pick you up from the airport. It will be very much cheaper than taking an airport taxi.
As Ronald says, contact yesTourism for help.
Enjoy,David :D
