Trouble in paradise

Post by GillMathews »

Competition for the tourist trade is taking on very shady tones! Whilst I was in Tobago this time one of the glass bottomed boats in Store Bay called The Sun Fun which I usually go on and whose crew I therefore know was destroyed overnight. Apparently heaped life jackets and burning tyres did the job very well and although in the morning it was thought to be repairable by the following day it had sunk! Of course the whole episode has caused much consternation to all concerned especially as it seems insurance is not always used. There is already an investigation under way but in the meantime much speculation and disscusion about culprits is already rife.Shamefull events.Seems when times are tough the going gets tougher! Lets hope the situation resolves without too many reprisals.

Gill,

This may not be a case of competing for the tourist trade. When we were in Tobago in January some people we were with asked one of the local tour guides about a possible glass bottom boat trip and they were pointedly told that "those" people were destroying the reef. This may be a case of over zealous protectors of the environment taking drastic actions. Either way it is still distressing to hear of this.
