Music music music

Post by Carol Townsend »

I'm at it again. I've noticed I'm a guru now,and looked it up in my pre historic paper dictionary, which defines guru as "leader and advisor".That's not me at all! My ambition is to be "oh so sad!"
Back to business.
A piece of music we will always associate with Tobago is "Always on my mind" by Sean Paul. Daughter is a big fan of his. We were coming down the hill from Big Bay, wearing beach gear, daughter wearing an itsy bitsy bikini modestly wrapped up in a huge towel, when we heard this song coming from a shop. "Sean Paul!" squeals daughter, and starts dancing, something she would never do at home. Chap comes out of shop, huge grin on his face."Dancing in the street! That's good!" he says.At home, you would just get looks of disdain, in Tobago, it's encouraged!
Yesterday, I was in a shop with daughter when we heard another song we had heard in Tobago ; something about "beautiful girls and "suicidal", so we started jigging around (sedately,on my part) until we remembered where we were!
That's something we will remember about Tobago; music everywhere.I may not have liked all of it, but it's something to remember. We discovered that if we could get the radio going with the right music in the car, we had far more waves from the locals than otherwise. I regret that, with not being used to being waved at, we were sometimes too late to respond (hubby really should drive more slowly!)
If you hire a car, make sure you get the radio going, and for goodness sake don't close the windows and use the air con.Have the windows wide open and soak up the atmosphere. 8)
Gotta go!

Carol, I agree with you completly. The music everywhere is one of the joys of being in Tobago. I love it, Def no air con in the car for me, Windows all open and let the island in! "You have nice music lady" and "good tunes" are a couple of the comments made to me when I have been out and about. Not been home long and missing it already.

For the record . . . the song "Always on My Mind" is by Da'Ville featuring Sean Paul.

And yes, the music is a huge part of the Tobago experience! I always return with lots of new tunes. Have you checked out Richie Spice? He performed there this summer and has two hits not to be missed: "Brown Skin" and "Youths Dem Cold". They both played practically nonstop on Tambrin all summer. Get ready to dance!

Hugh

PS. David W. has some great songs/videos linked to his site. %*}

Thanks Hugh.
Have passed info onto aforementioned daughter who said, eyes rolling to the sky;"Yes Mum I KNOW(sigh)".Oh well
Can anyone tell me what "whinin' " means in Tobago-ese? Or is it unsuitable for a respectable site like this? Daughter hints that it is. She's 15 and knows more than I ever have.
See ya

Wine, wine, wine!

As a high school teacher I have found that my best lessons are learned from 14 and 15 year olds!

In T&T winin' is completely respectable and actually required. 8) You better start practicing!

Thanks to you both!
Hugh, trust me, you do NOT want to see me winin'. I'm short, and what my friend calls "traditionally built".
David, yes I have heard, and liked "cold sweat", but give me a break!
I haven't got to grips with Tobago-ese, even though I tried to study the expressions on this site. I gather you are disappointed with me in some way? :? I will try to make amends in some way
Keep good
