You can't win 'em all!
Just been talking to a friend:
"How was your holiday? You look well."
"Oh fantastic " I reply. "Beautiful beaches, green and unspoilt , charming people..."
" Did you buy some nice stuff?"
"Not much. It's very un - commercialised you see, and we stayed in a tiny fishing village, not at all touristy."
" What a shame. I like going round all the shops when I'm on holiday."
"You may not like Tobago then."
"No."
I promise you she's a very nice lady, but I won't be going on holiday with her!
Bye for now
Carol

ha! sometimes you are surprised how differently people that you know well and like spend their holidays.... I am not going to ask any of my friends and family to come here and see me anymore...the ones who will love it will come earlier or later and the other ones will just not get it...
a wise person (you know who you are) once (or a million times) said: "you must open your pores and let tobago under your skin!"
guess that worked just fine for you, Carol!
seems we have you back here ASAP

David,
Yes indeed. Shopping is a right pain in the bamsee. However we do have "rellies" who always buy us souvenirs, even if the've only been to France for a day,and even if its all made in China, so we had to do a littlle shopping, otherwise they would think us very mean.
We spent I would say 2 hours souvenir shopping, which isn't too bad for a 2 week stay! And we are very pleased with a wall hanging we bought at Buccoo whilst waiting for Sunday School to start. It shows a figure (male, naturally) reclining on a hammock against a background of a banana and a mango tree.It has lovely orange and red colours, and is now adorning the chimney breast in our longe.
I promise we would NEVER go on holiday for the shops! Have you seen some of the tourist tat on sale in the departure lounge at Crown Point?
Take care

The only thing I buy to bring home is HOT Sauce. But I have only ever bought the commercially available stuff from Penny Savers. Has anyone ever found real homemade Hot Sauce anywhere? Perhaps in the market at Scarborough?

Tony, just check the labels in the supermarket. the ones that are just noraml paper are homemade. same with the little tarts and stuff in the bread section. it is made in homes, collected and brought to the supermarket... also the market sells some nice bottled homemade spices inside the building in the middle!
enjoy the "Tobago Ketchup" as we call it (and that's how alibaba eats it, just like ketchup...)

hot sauce
I can totally relate. I only bring home hot sauce and rum. One of the best ones that I have brougt home is "V's Kitchen Delight Hot Sauce". The 'plain white label' says made by Verlyn Moore, Lammy Road, Argyle Cell no. 742-3059.(hot pepper, pumpkin or paw-paw, garlic, mustard, vinegar and stabilizer) I bought it in one of the little grocery's in Roxborough. Of course there are many more delightful choices around the island to bring home to remind us of Tobago.

The only things my kids and I bought were 'friendship' style bracelets from a trader in Charlotteville. The girls got a rasta weave and a T&T red white and black weave.
Mine was very simple made from black string and some kind of red and black beans.
The last bean fell off last week
Time to go back methinks!

The only shopping we did was for a pair of custom made sandals for Mary Lou from Sammie Clarke at Store Bay. http://billbrunner.myphotoalbum.com/vie ... yPoint_033
We didn't even purchase souvenirs for the grandkids; we just gave each of them a handful of TT coins.
Bill
Oh yea, we also bought two liters of Bombay Sapphire gin at the duty free in Piarco on the way home
