Hillsborough Dam

Has anyone taken a tour to Hillsborough Dam? I understand that there are caymen (small crocs) there. Is there anything else to see? Can you go on your own or do you need to go with a guide? Any information would be helpful.

Hi Joanne,

The last news I had on the dam was that it was closed to the public because of security reasons. Not sure what the current update is, but I'm sure Steve will know!

When I last visited the area a couple of years ago, there were certainly some caimans on view lazing peacefully by the banks of the reservoir. Didn't venture too close but they appeared oblivious to our presence!

Unfortunately the dam is still closed for the public, you might see caymans close to the overflow from the road nearby if you use binoculars.

Thanks to Bob and Patrick. this forum is a godsend! It keeps us from wasting precious time once we're actually on the island!! We might have decided to drive over there from Castara.

Hi, the road as such to hillsborough is an experience itself and it makes You feel as removed from the present as possible. The Old Road from Castara is however closed with concrete blocks from what I remember. We took an old 1960-s map and had fun driving straight through from south to north. And Sheppy´s car worked wonders. I would not attempt it in an ordinary saloon car though. Have fun.

the road is really an adventure! make sure you have a jeep and the rental is OK with you passing there, so you don't get in trouble afterwards. it is very washed out at times... but the nature arround it is great and definately worth doing it. you also pass a lovely waterfall after the dam. from the road you just see a little parc on the right, don't miss it...

Nope,I think it is Greenhill Falls that come from Hillsbrough,and no there are no official tours ..it is a "secured area".
But Bill B. knows differently!!!!!!

Actually David I was the one who got the stinger in my shoe while climbing up the hillside to the dam. I understand how you were confused as it seems to my recollection that you stayed behind in the shady comfort of the jeep while the rest of us ventured into the hot sun.

"Security" was quite tight.

As we drove through the entrance and past the open door of a utility building we disturbed one of the employees who was sprawled out asleep on a long counter. He lurched up and gave us a sheepish grin and a wave as we drove by.

In early November we had a very interesting drive up from Hillsborough Bay, past the Greenhills Waterfall, which has a lovely little garden, to the dam itself, and then onwards and back to the main road. There was no signage or barriers to indicate that this was through a "secured area", and we saw several other private and official vehicles along the road (though I wouldn't want you to think that it was actually busy!)

The road itself is unsuitable for an ordinary saloon car; you should have a jeep with good ground clearance; but it takes you through varied and spectacular scenery. If you want "off the beaten track", this is it - almost literally from time to time
