Day trip to Union Island - Review

Post by Simon »

Yes Tourism organised a day trip for our party of six to Union Island in the Grenadines, which we went on last week - it was absolutely fantastic!!! Without doubt the highlight of our holiday.

We felt a little like guinea pigs as I don't believe this trip has been organised by Patrick before and so he came with us as well!

We flew from Crown Point in a 10 seat BN Islander - which first had to fly from the Grenadines to pick us up and then fly somewhere else for fuel - this does make the trip pricey - but in our view is well worthwhile. We took off in a heavy rainstorm, beware small aircraft and heavy weather - the ride does get bumpy! Our youngest son found the flights a bit scarey - but the pilot looked very casual about it all so I thought it must be ok - ignorance is bliss!

Having landed at Union Island and gone through the tedious process of form filling we were taken by electric buggy passed a rather sad looking pool of captive sharks to a boat awaiting us to take us aboard the old schooner the 'Scaramouche' - straight out of being filmed in 'Pirates of the Caribbean'.

The welcome was wonderful, breakfast and coffee etc were layed on and we set sail. Three islands were visited - where you could do just what you wanted, snorkel, laze about, walk the beach or whatever. At James beach some were taken out to the nearby reef where they could snorkel. Lunch was provided which was delicious - you never had to ask for a drink - service was excellant.

Passengers made up a party of about 20 people (it is a big boat) and the trip was made special by the excellant company - we partied all day long!! Some had come from Barbados and some from Grenada - most were English.

The final stop is at Palm Island where you can shop at the local hotel boutique (more strain on the credit cards!) or visit their bar.

The day was just too short and before long we found that we had to fly back to Tobago! (Another bumpy ride)

If you are in any doubt about taking this trip - it is well worth the expense!
No doubt some of the fun must depend on the mix of passengers aboard.

The sea is so clear and incredibly blue! The islands are beautiful, the beaches are dazzingly clean and the crew were brillant - go for it!

Was the sea choppy?

We want to do this trip whilst we are in Tobago in a couple of weeks time, my one reservation is how choppy the sea is.

Was the ride quite bumpy or was it a smooth sail?

Hi Wendy

Most of the sailing was in quite sheltered waters and was very smooth - I would be surprised even in stronger wind conditions that the sea ever got uncomfortably rough.

The only bumpiness we had was on the plane!

It really is a wonderful trip - to us the real icing on the cake was the great mix of people aboard the boat which made up to a party atmosphere.
