Need Car to get around in Charlottesville?

Post by Kathy »

Hello everyone.

We will be all over island prior to staying in Charlottesville. We were thinking of finally giving up the car there and limin' near Man O War/Pirates Bay beaches...

Can you please tell us if we would need the car just while staying in/exploring Charlottesville - meaning can we walk into town/get rotis...from beach/coast area? Or are things more spread out than I would know?

Thank you.

Hi Kathy

Is your location of ‘PA’ the South Sea island, or Pennsylvania in the USA? If the latter, I assume you would prefer to drive around Charlotteville. If the former, you will probably just skip around the village on one leg.

I’m only teasing, of course. Park your car in the middle of Charlotteville and you could almost throw a stone to the outreaching houses (please don’t try this just to prove me wrong). I’m exaggerating of course, but you’ll know why once you’ve been there.

There are outlying places you might want to visit, but many are on unmade roads, so not advisable unless you are a very confident driver. On the other hand, you have to get to Charlotteville and back again, and private taxis aren’t that cheap. Renting a vehicle by the week works out cheaper than by the day (roughly seven days for the price of six), so it could work out cheaper to rent a vehicle for the longer term, even though it will be parked up while in Charlotteville. It all depends upon how long you will be there. Talking of unmade roads, you must take a run up Flagstaff Hill– particularly at sunset.

Hi Kathy,

No need for a car in Charlotteville - plenty of restaurants in walking distance - and you can't drive to the nicest beach (Pirates bay). However we have found that with the price of taxis compared to car rental it has not been much more expensive to keep a car whilst in charlotteville as Steve said.

very envious - can't wait for our next trip in March... enjoy!
