Bloody Airport Strikes!!

Post by Carole Ward »

Well can you believe it these strikes planned by BAA staff coincide nicely with when we are due to go to Tobago on 17th January. I can't believe it, we haven't had a holiday for years and have been so looking forward to this one and now it could all be ruined. If the strikes do go ahead then who knows whether we will actually get to Tobago and if we do when it will be as I have a feeling Virgin only fly there on a Thursday so if we had to put it off for a week then the accommodation will probably not be available.

Virgin staff are also striking but apparently our flight is not going to be affected by that.

Sorry everyone but I needed to rant about this I am so upset, of all the days in January it has to be the dates we are due to go away! I hope they resolve this bloody dispute before hand, we never seem to have any good luck  :( [-o<

Hi David

Yes insurance should cover it, but the problem is if it does happen and we have to change, I don't think the accommodation will be available later now, or if there will be availability anywhere else in Castara, so we may have to cancel altogether :(

I'm just praying they resolve the dispute [-o< [-o<

Hmm! I'm also concerned about the effect the strikes may have on our travel arrangements. We've been assured by Virgin that although their cabin crew are due to be on strike on 10th Jan, the Tobago flight is still scheduled to depart as per usual. Not totally reassured by this but what can we do? Que sera... Also there is the possible knock-on effect of the BAA staff strike 24hrs earlier. I wouldn't mind if they all went on strike while we were in Tobago but Gatwick? Hrumph!

I am certainly feeling for you Carol. Big time.

There ain't nothing we can do about it 'cept try and have a good Xmas and hope that all this is resolved.

Hi David and Tony

I have emailed Ancle at the Naturalist where we are booked in to - to let him know the situation and ask if he could accommodate us if we need to change the date. He said at the moment he has space but who knows in a couple of weeks the situation might be different. I have also checked out other flights and we could possibly go with BA or XL if we can get the money back from Virgin or on our insurance, in which case we might be able to go on the Saturday (but that might be a bad idea being the day after the 48 hour strike the airport will probably be in chaos like Tony said!) or the Monday.

Trouble is its all speculation at the moment, the strikes by BAA might not happen if they reach an agreement before, so I don't want to change anything until we know for sure as I obviously can't claim on the insurance unless it actually happens.

Tony I hope you get away alright, Virgin told us we wouldn't be affected by their crew strike either so I will keep my fingers crossed for you (and us).

I suppose I have to just try and have a nice Christmas and not worry too much until we know for sure - its the uncertainty that makes it worse though, if I knew it was definitely going to happen then I could be sorting it out now! Will have a look at the Beach House though David if it does happen and Ancle can't accommodate us for the whole time, I know we are OK with him until 30th Jan, but might need to find something after that to make up the 14 nights.

I am determined we will get there one way or the other, so looking forward to having a large drink with you both when we arrive!!

Arrrrghhhhhhhhhh!!!

Hi David

That's just the Virgin air crew strikes though ...... the BAA strikes is a whole other story!! The airports will be closed if it goes ahead.

Hope you had a lovely Christmas in the sunshine!

Hi Carole

Just heard on Radio 4 that the airport workers have called off their strike on 7th Jan (which is good news for us) so there is reason to be optimistic that they will call off the other strikes planned.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you.
